Sometimes with tv writers, I wonder if we (the audience) are reading more brilliance than is actually there because we want it to be. I don't know.
It feels that way with the Cult of Joss sometimes. Penny is just such a flat character; I didn't get that she got her homeless shelter by hard work, I got that her ties to Captain Hammer got it put in her lap. It's completely hard to tell, though, how much of her own effort went into it, since we only really see her through the eyes of the male characters.
