Well, there's no reason you'd know this or remember it - but I was an English Lit. Major with a minor in Cultural Anthropology - so for at least four years, I read nothing but literary novels. Also for a bit, I even considered getting a Master's Degree in English Literature. Then, worked hard to learn how to write better - and well, you tend to write what you read. (Be sort of like taking Fine Arts, but never studying Gaugin, Picasso, etc, and just looking at the trashy/pop artists.)

That's not to say I haven't read the trashy ones, I have. Loads. I just don't remember most of them, they've blurred together. I read all the Agatha Christie novels as a kid, just can't remember any of them except possibly Sleeping Murder and Curtain. Also read PD James, Georgette Heyer, Helene McInnis, Anne McCaffrey, David Baldacci, John Grisham, Michael Crighton, Tom Clancy, Jeffrey Archer, Harold Robbins, Jackie Collins, Rosemary Rodgers, countless Harlequinns, John Jakes, Gore Vidal, Dan Brown,
Danielle Steele, Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Elizabeth Bear, Elizabeth Hand, Terry Prachett, Neil Gaiman,
George RR Martin, Dan Simmions, Kim Harrison, Anne Rice, the list is endless.

So I read trashy novels. Heck the Katherine Neville novel listed above is a trashy pop novel, hardly literature. ;-)
