You make a very convincing argument to explain some very contradictory behavior regarding Spike's relationship/not-relationship to Buffy and her family and friends in season 5. Thank you! (That contrast between trusting Spike with her nearest and dearest and then saying she had no relationship with him apart from beating him up had always bothered me.)
Also, excellent point about Angel/Angelus with his father-god obsession and Spike's worship of the mother/earth goddess.
