Dead Set was, indeed, based around a zombie invasion of a reality TV show. It was written by Charlie Brooker who is a UK writer/critic with an extremely dark sense of humour (you may remember that in the 2004 US elections he wrote a TV review column for the Guardian about coverage of the election in the UK that ended with a remark re Bush along the lines of "John Wilkes Booth, Lee Harvey Oswald, your country needs you again!", which caused an international scandal after Republicans falsely claimed that it was a leader article in the newspaper calling for GWB's assassination). I didn't watch it because I gathered it contained much more gore than I'm comfortable with but the reviews were extremely good.
