Hmmm...well, I can say that I'm waiting to see what happens in the next eight issues before I decide if I continue reading the comics. I don't trust Whedon to provide me with a satisfying story for these characters, not when he bends over backwards to sell me - Xawn. Sorry, not sold. I agree with Nick Brendan on that one.
Isn't this what Twilight did in Retreat? He had humanity (an army) attacking the Slayers.
Yep. Twilight, from what I can see has read a great deal of Machiavelli. He also wants to essentially start the chain of events that lead to the Frayverse. Which makes me think Willow sent the wrong person into the future. I'd have loved to see a conversation between Twilight and Harth. ;-)
Your pointing out how this resonates with Spike makes me wonder if Spike isn't meant to show up and after having not been around Buffy, he's finally gotten over her...? Because the only way to get over her was to be away from her. Hrm. I'm afraid that's an unhappy thought for me. What if that's the twist? Angel and Spike do return, but they no longer love her. UGH.
I'm not sure. But I remember Girl in Question - where Andrew told Angel and Spike that Buffy had moved on, and if they don't they may never catch up with her. I think that's a possible twist and I would not put it past Whedon to do that.
That said, there is a definite difference between Satsu and Spike, besides gender. Spike knows Buffy better than Satsu. Spike knew all Buffy's main exes (ones she slept with), including Parker. And unlike Satsu, he put up with unrequited love, never left for ages.
He did clearly develop feelings for Fred over on Angel and Illyria. What we don't know is:
1.If Buffy knows he is alive 2. If they have been in contact 3. If he has moved on (outside what is being shown on IDW and I can't tell if Whedon considers that part of his canon or not, I'm guessing from what we heard this past week - NOT.) 4. How Buffy feels towards Spike 5. How he feels 6. If he is aware of Twilight at all and if so, is involved at all.
We don't know anything about Spike. Or where he is for that matter. The fact that he hasn't shown up yet, I find odd and a bit suspicious. But the references to him are staggering. The writer has had far too much time to build this and keeps dropping hints. To the point that I'm about to scream - get on with it already - tell me. You've been hinting for three years.
Also, there's an indication in Buffy's dreams, that she fears both Angel and Spike have moved past her. That she doesn't matter to them, that she let them down in some way. Which makes me wonder if Andrew told her about Girl in Question and spun it certain way?? Wouldn't put it past Andrew. Maybe Andrew is a Spangle shipper??? That I also wouldn't put past Andrew. But in the dream that Ethan invaded - there's an indication that she may be wrong. (shrug)
What we are getting at the moment is Buffy's pov and her fears!
And this makes me wonder if it's not a set-up for the fact that Angel broke her heart beyond repair, meaning she's always "too late" with the ones she loves (I've long suspected this, but I've never seen it seen it so clearly in the text before). And if so, is this set-up for Buffy/Angel hijinks (true love forever!)
No. Definitely not. Re-read Time of Your Life, pay close attention to the Melaka /Harth relationship. Also Wolves at the Gate - Dracula's speech about being a horrible man who killed before becoming a vampire, that it is the old man they have to worry about. There's lots of little clues...that indicate this is not going to end romantically.
or will it finally be the time for Buffy to heal her heart over Angel? God, I hope it's the latter.
I think so. This is supposed to be according to interviews prior to its start to be about female empowerment and how men and the world can't handle it.
I think Whedon is resolving these relationships finally. (which is why I'm hanging in there because I'm curious to see how he resolves them.)
