Just thought of something last night, while reading Whedonesque actually.
King of Cretin - a Xander fan - points out that the Xander/Buffy conversation in summary is:
Buffy: I love you. Xander: No, you don't but thanks for saying it.
That hit me. Okay, there are one too many references here to Chosen. Plus Whedon throws out at the Humanist Q&A - "Buffy loves Spike or Satsu.." Which means, that he knows that is unresolved. Also, ask yourself what do Satsu and Spike have in common? My guess is Buffy would have fallen in love with Satsu in that way...if a)Buffy were gay or bi, or b)Satsu were a guy, like Spike.
Another thing - on the letter's page - the only question Allie answers is whether or not Buffy knows Spike is alive. The letter writer assumes she mustn't. Allie responds - how do you know that? We never said that. It was never indicated. If anything it's more than likely she does know - off panel discussions with Andrew.
That's when something else occurred to me - we are in Buffy's pov. All the references are made when we are in Buffy's pov. And Buffy's dreams regarding Spike are:
1. Spangel 2. Spuffel 3. Ethan using Spike's slang and posturing.
I think - Buffy knows Spike is alive, but since she's not seen him and has not had any direct contact outside of Andrew - she believes he doesn't care about her any longer that he moved on with Angel and is now with Angel, doing for Angel all the things he did for her - ie. Right hand man, support, etc. Andrew probably told her that he saw Spike with Angel not once but twice - the buddy relationship to beat all buddy relationships (which would explain the Spangel nightmare and Spuffle fantasy). After all from Andrew's perspective - Spike had joined Angel's team. Angel saved Spike. Spike came as emotional support for Angel when he went to Rome. (Remember in S2, when she lost Angel - he went to join Spike and Dru. Also keep in mind that up until Chosen - Spike and Angel weren't on speaking terms. They were both ready to beat the other one senseless. She even states, god, more vampire jealousy, I should just put you two in a room together and let you fight it out and there could be oil. So...several months later, after she thinks Spike is dead, along troops Andrew, who blurts that he's still alive, that he didn't want her to know about it, and he's living with and working with his old pal Angel in La. Oh and he figures he can let the cat out of the bag now that ...Angel brought Spike with him to Rome to find Buffy - assuming he told her about Rome, he may not have for obvious reasons.)
So she knows he's alive and she also knows that he didn't try to find her on his own. He didn't come after her. He didn't try to contact her. Instead he joined Angel.
Which means in her head, she was too late. He doesn't believe she loves him or needed him. And he moved on with Angel. He clearly doesn't love her any more. And being Buffy, she has internalized all of this, not admitted it to anyone, and repressed.
I think this will most likely be addressed before issue 40, if we're lucky - before issue 36.
Whedon clearly has plans regarding it - the number of references to Chosen and Spike, and the Spike/Buffy relationship are staggering. And the fact that of her three ex's the only one not directly referenced by her is Spike or the fact that he only shows up in her head attached to Angel says something. Whedon is interested in emotional relationships, according to Allie and Whedon himself.
No...I don't think the resolution will be as simple as the Xander/Buffy one was, since their relationship was not that simple.
