Honestly, they shouldn't have talked him out of killing Xander in Season 7. And I say that with not one ounce of malice towards Xander. It's just that looking at what was playing out in the season... Buffy being kicked out of the house and crawling off to lick her wounds alone would have been much more gut wrenching and effective and not nearly as "WTF?!" with the rest of the characters, had it been due to Xander's death.
(Of course my opinion is that Chosen would have played exponentially better had Angel not shown up in it. Angel's presence was a needless distraction to the plot that clearly had no connection to his character arc. David Boreanaz's time would have been far better spent having The First become Angelus for a while and having Buffy have to confront Angelus and all he represents to her arrested emotional development. Angelus would have actually been a more productive cameo than Angel).
