Had similar issues with Dollhouse, although it did wake me up to what Whedon was doing with Twilight and who Twilight was.
Course it did not help - that Boyd was amongst my favorite characters on Dollhouse. Really wished he hadn't done that for oh so many reasons.
At any rate, I agree in some respects it does work better than it did in Dollhouse. Because there's been more groundwork. But, I am struggling a bit with Angel playing the Cord
