Oh, absolutely I am not comparing X/F to B/S in depth of emotion, love, complexity--there are merely some surface similarities that, as you point out, break down under close inspection. Xander did, naively, think that his sex with Faith gave them a connection, but I think it's probably closer to Buffy/Parker, except that instead of being rudely rebuffed as Buffy was, he is sexually assaulted and nearly strangled to death.

I do agree that Buffy/Spike and Xander/Anya work much better. :)
