To me it definitely hinges on the Sideways universe. If Jacob is responsible for the Sideways-verse (which I don't think he is, but I'll leave it out there as a possibility for now) that's one thing. But, if it's a matter of the Sideways-verse being free of Island/Jacob influence as opposed to Lost!Prime and its Jacob-influenced game of 'Go,' then I think it definitely means that Jacob is not benevolen... even if he thinks that he is.
If this is an experiment, it's a deeply flawed and marred by his own interference (and rather old-testament-like, reminding me of God and Lucifer arguing over Job). If Sideways!Verse is the control, then it seems to show that the characters are capable of their own redemption and that Jacob's 'test' only makes things worse.
I kind of like that the idea that 'redemption', such as it is, depends more on their relationships with each other than the will or the games of the gods. In sideways-verse each of their lives is influenced when they cross paths with a fellow Lostee. Real!Locke learned soemthing from Hurley and Rose. Sawyer opened up to Miles. Jack got something useful from Dogen, etc. (Which in turn leaves me hopeful for Sayid and Jin, who just crossed paths).
Ultimately (I hope) I'll be satisfied if it's about humanity... not inhuman, indecipherable 'gods' and 'devils'.
