My major quarrel with Willingham's Spike is not that I don't think Spike can be rude, crude and badly behaved. We all know that he can. It's that Willingham's version of the character seems to have no positive qualities at all. He's not even any good in a fight.
It's like Willingham has taken all the most negative qualities of the character (which I suspect are the only ones he can see, or the only ones he enjoys), dialled them up to 11 and thrown the positive qualities out in the trash.
In other words, it's a caricature. Caricatures are based on the actual character, just exaggerated out of all proportion.
