I wasn't too sure of the concept when it first started, but I watched mostly for the squee-ness of the musical numbers, which tap into every bit of my secret inner show tunes geek. And seriously, To Sir With Love? The obscure perfection of their song choice continues to amaze.
Like BtVS, Glee is one of those shows that's really come into its own as the season has progressed, and like you said, there's been tremendous growth in all the characters. I'm definitely a convert. :)
