I'm doubting anything before 39 which I guess is supposed to be tragic. Any rebuilding will be done in S9. If there are any readers left.
Really, though, I don't think it's possible at this point to rebuild her in a natural way because of the way things are written. We're never given any insight into *why* she's doing these things. Sure some people like to fanwank them away, but we're not given anything in the text as to why she suddenly thinks robbing banks is OK. Willow was redeemable because we saw what made her go nuts. Angel the same way after what happened with Darla. We don't see any impetus at all with Buffy and without that, I don't believe you can come back. We know her stance on all this stuff from the TV show so any rebuilding isn't going to have any emotional resonance to it.
Also irksome to me was the writers obvious attempt to make Angel look better. Whether it was successful is debatable, but they made the attempt. Meanwhile Buffy's left in the lurch through it all. Obviously I'm a Buffy fan, so this pisses me off greatly. I like the heart theory that part of her is missing (soul, spirit, whatever) and she'll wake up, but my hopes, they are low.
It's definitely too long, but I think Joss wanted 40 issues for the biblical connotations the number has with judgments and tribulation.
