Oh, I read it right, I think I just wasn't clear in my response--I'm not the most eloquent person. What I meant by an attempt to explain his actions wasn't the God's purpose thing, just his "I don't wanna do this!" stuff. Which I suppose you could argue makes him look worse. The whole thing was added pretty much for those 2-3 pages.
Whedon is discussing the reliance on a higher being.
Definitely agree there. The juxtaposition of Angel and Spike in 36 is pretty blatant with that--Spike arrives in a ship, uses computers and brainpower to suss things out vs Angel who does what God tells him with little question. And 34 seems like it's more a reverse of the Adam/Eve myth. If I recall correctly, even Jeanty said something about one of them being a serpent and not knowing it in the upcoming issues. S8 is supposedly about fairy tales and I think Whedon would believe religion to be the biggest fairy tale of them all so I think it'll play a big part in the final run.
Buffy who doesn't trust those who have earned her trust from Xander to Willow.
I could maybe see that, except Joss offsets it with Buffy clearly not being able to trust her friends because of the flashforward. Unlike Whistler and the PTB who jerked Angel around before, Robin showed two truths. Then of course DW in the future. The Scooby solidarity thing has always been shaky as illustrated in S6 and S7. So I don't necessarily think it's out of line for Buffy to think her friends might side against her.
We're probably going to need another issue to really get a good grasp. The Master's role in all this will probably illustrate it clearly. But it's fun to speculate. :P
