Kickass Film Review

shadowkatMindy aka Hit Girl is my new fav super-hero. 12 years old, 4 feet tall, and able to take out an entire room full of goons.
In case you're curious? Just finished watching Kickass which is a brilliant riff on the whole superhero genre, written by and based on Mark Millar's comic of the same name. Also has a great soundtrack. It basically subverts and makes fun of the entire superhero genre, referencing everything from X-men to Runaways. (I include Sin City and Batman in that as well.)
It is a bit violent though - although more cartoon violence than anything else. (ie. if you can handle the violence in flicks like History of Violence, Dark Knight, The Walking Dead, and Supernatural - you can handle this. It's bang bang, blood splatter, dead. )
The story is told from the pov of a 15 year old guy geek, who wants to be a superhero. He doesn't have superpowers or money. He just decides to buy a costume and be one. And gets his ass royally kicked. But gets over it and runs into the aforementioned Hit Girl and her father, Big Daddy - who do have their act together in a major way.
Told with a blend of action and art, this film accomplishes what Ang Lee attempted to do with The Hulk and never quite pulled off - to create a film that felt a bit like a graphic novel. The back story of Big Daddy and Hit Girl is told in comic style, in part because Big Daddy is a comic book artist and has drawn it for his daughter. Big Daddy's back story is your typical comicbook hero vigilante back-story, but told in a tongue firmly in cheek style.
It's a fun ride, not very deep, yet satirical in places and subversive in others - not as much as it aught to be perhaps, but more so than most of the other superhero flicks I've seen. Definitely worth a rental. And yes, it's a boy fantasy piece for the most part, but aren't all of these things? Annoying, I know. But until some more women step up and get hired to write their own fantasy version- us gals are going to have to live with the guy's take on it. Will state - that at least Hit Girl is not sexualized, and she is definitely better at what she does than any of the men or boys in the movie. Surprised the heck out of me. I wasn't expecting to like it, was expecting to be offended. Quite the opposite. Plus, it helps that the color of her costume is my favorite color - purple.
Overall rating? A for enjoyment.
Still have the cough, dang it. It's happens after I've talked to someone for a while or laughed or clear my throat. Otherwise, I don't cough. Going to call the doctor on Monday and see if I can get an appointment within the next two weeks - maybe get Advair (prescription only, not available otherwise - I know, I checked) and anti-boitics or at the very least an allergist referral. I already have the humidifier. Tomorrow - off looking at apartments again. I made the mistake of calling them flats to my realtor and she got confused.
