Whenever I try to take it seriously I tend to get very angry and/or disgusted. So I try to stick to mocking, because that's better for my blood pressure.
Having the same problem. Part of it is that I read their meta or take on what the point or theme is - and sometimes it's quite beautiful, but I look at the text. And I'm sorry the text, the artwork, the plot - just does not support the theme they've come up with.
While it's all well and good to tell me that this story is about icons having feet of clay, and being powerful on human terms and not as a super-being, I do not see that reflected in the text, well not unless I ignore 85% of the text and make up the rest emphasizing only the bits that may support it. I do, however, see that theme reflected in both tv series. The TV series does reflect that theme. Buffy's power came from her not the slayer strength. Becoming was about that. As was the Gift, and numerous other episodes. And she shouldn't be held up on a pedestal - that was one of the theme's of S6 and S7. And I do see the themes of free will vs. fate reflected in the series. But in the comics? Sigh. The comics are a mess.
