Vamp Diaries is just cheesy fun. Granted it has slow smulchy romantic bits...but they don't last that long.

Warning: I'm being a little snarky within this post. This can rub some folks the wrong way. Please take it in the light-hearted spirit it's meant. Part of my enjoyment of Vamp Diaries is making fun of it and being critical of it. And I like to be critical of tv shows I enjoy. It's fun for me. Back when Buffy was on - I used to meet a friend for dinner once a week and we'd rip the show's plot apart over sushi. Anywho if this sort of thing makes you see red or rubs you the wrong way - just skip. I'd get annoyed if someone ripped The Good Wife apart in the same manner.

I actually think the term "Vamp Diaries" fits better than "Vampire Diaries."

Highlights?

*Apparently the show decided to emphasize my point from last week - that Elijah is only dead until someone decides to pull the dagger out of his chest. This week it was Jonas - who despite everyone's advice to the contrary decided Elijah's end game was the only one in town, and sent his son Lucas into the dangerous territory in order to resurrect Elijah. Because only Elijah could kill Klaus, and only by sacrificing Elena. Now that's what I call loyalty. Also slightly stupid arrogant. I mean come on - you honestly didn't think our heroes (okay ...of the more than slightly homicidal variety) wouldn't catch on to your ruse? Jonas to Lucas - grab a stake and kill Katherine, she's a vampire. (Uh, Jonas - that might not be a good idea - Katherine isn't alone in that house.) Kudos to the writers for setting that one up - work of beauty. Damon is shown earlier trying to burn Elijah with a flame thrower, which he leaves nearby. So when Katherine yells for his help, he picks it up and burns Lucas. (Jonas so deserved that. Lucas did for being stupid enough to do it. While Damon most likely would have done it if he'd seen Lucas - it wasn't really his fault, because in this case he just knew there was some weird psychic witch mojo going down and he had to stop it. Which he tells Stefan - "Some weird pyschic witch mojo that's trying to resurrect Elijah - go find them and stop it." Also I'm betting that Stefan would have burned Lucas too. But apparently the show decided Stefan had killed someone last week, and they should vary things up a bit.

What I don't understand is why Jonas wasn't bright enough to figure out that if they waited until Klaus showed up, and found a way of tricking people into removing the dagger and having someone use it to kill Klaus - he'd get what he wanted anyhow - without you know, putting Lucas into danger.
Seriously, could Jonas have been any more stupid? I think not.

But it was highly entertaining all the same. Far more entertaining than pretending to be friends with everyone, going along with their plan, and pulling a double-cross - by getting the dagger out of Elijah.

* Ah Jonas and Lucas - we hardly knew yah. Is it just me or is it dangerous to be a recurring supernatural character on this show? I swear they kill off new characters quick. They barely last six episodes if that. I mean Elijah, Jonas, Lucas, and Rose were all introduced maybe five episodes ago, and wham - all dead. Although there is a chance the least interesting of the bunch, Elijah, will pop up again soon. Since he's basically just dead as long as a dagger is sticking out of his chest. This begs the question - how are they going to kill Klaus.

*Apparently Bonnie knows. Or knows now. Since Jonas' dying gift or curse to Bonnie - was to return her powers and implant his desire for her to finish what he started and kill Klaus, thereby freeing his daughter. (Oh goody, another character to kill off.)

*Oh well, don't mourn their loss - we have the return of John, Isabelle and Katherine to take their place. Whose agenda is...well not so clear. They want Klaus dead. True. But what do they want with Elena? (Speaking of Elena, this girl is almost too good to be true. Seriously - she needs a flaw fast. Elena to Bonnie - oh, I'm so glad you're with Jeremy, he should have someone as awesome as you. Elena to Caroline - oh I feel so for your pain. The perfect sister, perfect friend, perfect girl-friend...is this a character or a paper-doll? Querying minds want to know.)

*Oh poor Matt. Now, I'm curious - is Matt a vampire now, or did she just heal him? It's not really clear from the ending. Could go either way. I'm hoping vampire - because like Elena, Matt is another character sorely in need of a personality, stat. This is the problem with Vamp Diaries - the human characters are written a tad flatly with few exceptions. They aren't explored or given much depth. Caroline is a perfect example - boring as all get-out as a human, becomes a vampire and gets incredibly interesting all of a sudden. Bonnie - boring human, interesting as a witch. Tyler - more interesting and complicated as a werewolf. Jeremy, Alaric and John are the only exceptions to this rule. It's not that they don't have problems - the flatly written characters - just that their problems are so paint-by-numbers cliche that you find your eyes rolling.

Regarding Caroline? When did she become an good singer? That actress is talented. I see big things in her future. Not so much for the rest of the cast, but definitely for that one.

*Isabelle showing up at the door made me squee. Yes, I like the gal formerly known as Jenny the Bitch on the L Word in this role, which is tailor made for her. She's great here. And she makes Elena more interesting. Actually Isabelle, John, Katherine, and Damon make Elena more interesting - as did Elijah and Rose. They bring out another side to her - one that is a little less cliche girl next door. Rounds her out a bit. Isabelle also makes Jenna more interesting - as well as Alaric.

Alaric to Jenna - all I can tell you is Isabelle is dead. But the rest, it's not my place to tell you. (Actually, having just been through this with another soap opera, I sort of think it is. But that's just me. One of the many things tv has taught me is keeping secrets is a bad idea. They always come out anyhow, and usually if you wait too long, in the worst way possible. Revenge is also a really bad idea. See TV can teach you something worthwhile.)

*Other squee moment or rather me jumping out of armchair with a startled squeak - was when Jonas who we thought was dead (not so much apparently) grabbing Bonnie in a death-grip and pouring her power back into her. (That'll teach Bonnie to lean over allegedly dead bodies and close their eyes.)
Katherine managed to succeed in killing Jonas - where Caroline had failed. Poor Caroline, just not old and powerful enough to take down a warlock or is that a witch? I guess.

* The mythology of this thing is rather interesting, more than most, I give LJ Smith assuming she's the one who came up with it - credit for that. Apparently witches can channel a great deal of power from the gravesight of witches who died. Because when a witch dies - they let off a ton of power. (Makes me wonder about Bonnie - does she just have her own power? Or her own power doubled? In which case, maybe leaning over allegedly dead bodies isn't such a bad thing - particularly if they are witches.)

* Finally - I rather like the chemistry between Dobrev and Sommerlander. Great lines in that banter.

Katherine - you hurt me.
Damon: tit for tat.
Katherine: You were cruel. Monsterous even. I like this new Damon...
Damon: Katherine - there are six bedrooms in this house, find another one.

Why isn't there more chemistry between Stefan and Dobrev? Probably just me. People see chemistry between characters that I don't and vice versa. Noticed that a while back. (shrugs). Anywho - loved the back and forth between Katherine and Damon. I actually like the Katherine/Damon banter better than the Katherine/Stefan banter or the Elena/Damon banter. Maybe because they are more equal in it? It reminds me of Darla and Angel in some respects or Spike and Dru, there's twisted history there. And history makes relationships interesting. Also, possibly the fact that I'm not a teenage girl and prefer mature relationships that have years of history behind them? (Yes, I'm the wrong demo for this show, I'm aware of that. Had the same problem with Buffy. CW used to remind me of that constantly when we worked together. "You do realize that is a show marketed to tween girls, right?" Me:"So? It's still fun and good. Really don't see who it is marketed to - matters? Besides, I have it on good authority that over a million people between the ages of 35-70 love it too, quite a few of them are scholars, scientist, supreme court appellate attorneys, physicists and a Tibetan Monk - I kid you not." (OF course that was Buffy, I seriously doubt the scholars, scientists, physicists, geneticists, appeallate attorneys, and Tibetan Monk are watching Vamp Diaries. But I could be wrong.) I refuse to cater to or be pigeon-holed by evil marketing people. Besides, you (meaning CW) watch Seventh Heaven! Who do you think that's being marketed to?)

So, now that February sweeps are over, we are on hiatus until April - so that everyone can watch the College Basketball Playoffs on ESPN. Making March an annoying month. Not my favorite month March. If I had money and time - I'd take off somewhere at the start of it - spend my birthday someplace exotic like Costa Rica or South Africa or Aruba.

I wonder if they have sweeps in February because it is a short month?

Probably shouldn't have deleted all those episodes of Breaking Bad - would have given myself something to watch. Oh well, I do still have Smallville/Nikita/Supernatural episodes saved up and March is going to be rather busy - working on synopsis, query letters, work is busier than ever (many fires erupted today that I had to fan down, Lucas wasn't the only one ablaze), hunting flat, church activities and social justice activities galore...busy, busy, busy. Plus not everything goes on hiatus - Being Erica just started as did the well-written and highly entertaining Justified (I'm in love with Timothy Olyphant). And there's The Good Wife - which I think also just went on hiatus for two weeks, dang it. Although complaining about hiatus in this day and age is sort of weird - since, we have our pick of new shows that take advantage of the old ones taking a rest. Also the net, netflix, etc. The information age really has changed how we view and access entertainment, hasn't it?
