A bit on the world news - apparently we've decided to declare war on Libya, as if we don't have enough Wars we are fighting. I'm not surprised, I knew it was only a matter a time. The US at the bequest of the UN has enforced the No-Fly zone by attacking the Libyan air force and stopping Quaddafi. In short the US is playing cop again.
Been reading my friends list or correspondence list, I actually prefer "correspondence list" but I don't do the programming on live journal. There's a smattering of posts on Spike comics (which I gave up on, in part because I hate the comic book store near me(and I mean really HATE) and because I am no longer interested. At all. It's weird. But Whedon in collaboration with Dark Horse, various actor and writer/editor interviews, and IDW has managed to kill my interest in well all things Whedon, Buffy, Spike, etc. I'm not entirely sure what it was exactly that killed my interest - I'm guessing it was a series of things akin to chinese water torture over an extended period of time that piled up on each other until one day I woke up and thought, eh, just don't care anymore. Going to spend my leisure time on more pleasurable things, thank you very much. And that was well that.) That said -
moscow_watcher's thoughts on the Spike comics are rather interesting and I rec her journal for anyone who is still following the things.
The news is warning us about Japanese food contaminated by radiation. Call me crazy? But I'm more worried about the Japanese. I find it highly annoying that Americans are worried about being contaminated by Japanese radiation...considering how far away we are. Selfish? Much? 24 year old Taylor Anderson who was working as an English Teacher in Japan died. So sad. I'm so happy my online friend is on her way back home.
Still on the news? That men are getting more jobs than women. Of the 1.3 million, nearly 90% went to men, only 113,000 to women. Men netted $600,000 while women got 300,000. Billions of dollars invested in jobs - went to men. Massive cuts to public sectors - 8 out of every 10, belonged to women. Yes, America is a sexist society. I think I'll stop watching Supernatural in protest. No wait, it has a female head-writer finally - so maybe not. Sexist yes, but employs female writers.
Last story was about how much cooler younger siblings are than older ones. Sigh. If he watched the news, I'm certain my kidbrother is rejoicing.
Hmmm...I'm reminded tonight of why I don't normally watch the news, and watch whatever is saved on DVR instead or talk to Momster on phone. Do not know what got into me tonight.
Saw a rather lovely meme on the mistresses of science fiction novels - I'd do it, but I haven't read 90% of these books. So am doing my own little meme - featuring the science fiction and sci-fantasy novels by women that I've read or can remember reading to date or happen to own and have yet to get around to reading. If you want to snag - go ahead. I'll bold what I read.
1. Doris Lessing - Canops in Argos : Archives
2. Restoree by Anne McCaffrey (I actually think it and The Ship Who Sang are more interesting than Crystal Singer, although Crystal Singer is admittedly less sexist.)
3. The Sparrow by Maria Doria Russell
4. Kindred by Octavia Butler
5. Carnival by Elizabeth Bear
6. The Lottery - short story by Shirley Jackson
7. Cordelia's Honor by Lois McMaster Bujold
8. Grass by Sherri Tepper
9. Dead Witch Walking by Kim Harrison (science-fiction/urban fantasy - where biotech- engineering is featured somewhat heavily, more so in later books - the author has a degree in bio-engineering)
10. Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
11. The Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood (a sci-fi novel inside a literary one)
12. Andre Norton - collection of short stories
13. The Pride of Chanur by CJ Cherryh (also Cyteen but have yet to read.)
14. The Snow Queen by Joan D. Vinge
15. Sharra's Exile by Marion Zimmer Bradley
And those are the only ones I remember at the moment. The problem with devouring books and not keeping track of them, is you can't always remember what you've actually read. Some of them blur together. Also, if you are like me - you forget titles and authors, you remember the story, you just can't remember who wrote it and often aren't sure you dreamed it up.
Fantasy list is probably longer and harder to remember. There appear to be more female fantasy writers than sci-fi for some reason.
Ugh - chockful of typos. But no time to edit, must make dinner and eat.
