That brothel bust is such a McNulty moment. "I was outnumbered!" And I know what you mean about the character type; he could so easily have become incredibly annoying, but if he's the protagonist of The Wire (which is a big if) he still never (well, not as often as some shows would) gets to get away with things because he's the protagonist. He's (in a lot of ways) a brilliant cop who occasionally causes more problems for his colleagues than he (immediately) solves. He's a drunk and a womanizer who flushes his life down the drain and it's not romanticized. It's not for nothing that "What the fuck did I do?" is the closest thing this show comes to a catchphrase...
