I've made it through the first five episodes now...if you ignore the A plot line or case of the week, and focus on the character relationships...they aren't bad. Also Lance Reddick/Blair Brown don't get much to do except look mysterious and foreboding. But I'm guessing that may change.
Come to the conclusion that Fringe is a bit like Farscape and Buffy, you have to get through the first 15 episodes before you get to the meat of the story. But if you miss the first 15 episodes, you won't appreciate the meat of the story when you get there. Also, it will be formulaic tv up to a point - can't avoid that, well unless you are on HBO, Showtime, F/X, or AMC - which permit more leeway.
I think John Noble is having a blast with his role.
