Amber oddly had issues with the fanboards as well who said she had to lose weight at the time. The camera adds five-ten pounds, it's how light bends around an object. And why Marsters looked amazing when he was ill and lost all that weight.
Whedon like a lot of Hollywood writers and producers put their actors on diets so they were stick thin for the camera. It was all about how they looked on screen.
I think the comment he made was he felt Tara was too womanly, too many curves, and he was seeing someone more "waifish" in the role and Marti convinced him that curves worked better, since Willow was already waifish. It was an odd comment that made me wonder about this incredibly short, balding, bearded fat guy writer. ;-)
