I think the reason some people care...is they want to read more about Spike from someone who has just started watching the series. A new take, as it were. And ..are mildly frustrated that they aren't getting that.
Let's face it - we don't have anything new to say about the character. And there's a desire to have new watchers...fall in love with the same characters you did. I'm not so sure validation is the right word...so much as connection.
