TV Poll Winners...assuming you are at all curious or too lazy to check the results yourselves
What TV SHOW ARE YOU WATCHING POLL RESULTS. I guess I should probably close these polls but that would require work and I don't work as a general rule on lj. This is for fun.
If I wanted to work - I'd start an official blog under my real name (considering there's more than 400 people online with my full real name that would be interesting - my parents aren't exactly creative in the naming department) and have ads. I don't. Because that would also require self-promotion and being the center of attention - and uh, no. LJ is fun due to the lie of anonymity. It's not really anonymous, but I can delude myself into believing it is.
Anyhow...the winners in the TV Poll Olympics are:
1. NEW DRAMA SERIES
* Elementary at 19 votes, with Arrow a close second at 18.
Having seen practically all the US TV premieres this does not surprise me in the slightest.
They are the most entertaining. NASHVILLE is a bit on the soapy side and not as much fun as REVENGE. It's also a little too precious and country for its own good. (ie - it's not going to grab the non-country, non-soap audience. So that's about two groups gone.)
Arrow...is a fun revenge story with a hot male lead, lots of action, and conspiracy that does not require too much thought and is about a super-hero most people have never heard of, but know enough about to be mildly curious. In short, it's fun. And stressed, depressed people want fun - particularly a fun show about a rich guy playing robin hood and killing rich bastards. Hey, it's Leverage for the comic book set!
Elementary...is a nice twist on Sherlock Holmes, and doesn't require too much attention and you don't have to tune in every week. IT's also different from the predecessors. Is it great, no, but it's better than just about everything else (which granted isn't saying much). And requires less commitment than Arrow.
Copper is on BBCAmerica - and is doing well for BBCAmerica, but not everyone gets that and its hard to find. Also very atmospheric and requires a lot of attention. I can't watch it every night. I wait. It requires too much attention on week-nights for my tired overworked brain.
Call the Midwife like Copper is also hard to find. And on PBS. And requires attention and commitment. Plus it's just a tad on the sentimental side.
2. In the New Comedy Olympics...the winner is:
Go On - which I agree with. It's the only one I found halfway interesting and have stuck with.
For a bit it was tied with the critically panned Partners. So you will have to explain the popularity of that one to me. I personally haven't tried it.
The New Normal is doing well. I get the appeal. But I'm so over the comedy duo of
Murphy/Falchuck who confuses shock-comedy with satirical wit. (They really need to watch more British comedy series. Quick, someone send Murphy the first season of Monty Python stat! Fawlty Towers might work too.). But flist seems to like it.
3. Returning Drama Series category the winners are:
Vamp Diaries and Once Upon a Time are tied for first with 19 votes each.
Interesting. I like both. But still, interesting.
These are followed closely by...Castle - which I frankly don't understand the appeal of. But I don't get the appeal of Bones either, admittedly. And it is also popular but not as popular as Castle.
I think I got burned out after watching: Ellery Queen, MacMillan & Wife, Hart to Hart, Murder She Wrote, Diagnosis Murder, Scarecrow and Mrs. King, Cover-up, Moonlighting, Remington Steele, the Equalizer, Mrs. Columbo, Nero Wolfe, Columbo, Mike Hammer and various others that I've forgotten. (As an aside the best were Ellery Queen (which I saw in reruns and starred Jim Hutton, Columbo, Moonlighting, and Nero Wolfe.)
After that it's..The Walking Dead at 13. Which I get. I watch it, it's strangely compelling for a zombie series based on a comic book. American Horror Story got sliced down to size...only 5 people are watching it.
Dexter, Revenge and Supernatural is tied for fourth.
5. For returning comedy...it's Big Bang Theory all the way. Which is the only one I watch consistently to be honest, so good to see I'm not alone. I say that as I'm half-watching Subgurgatory.
6. Lots of people are watching tv series I can't get access to. (I'm not complaining, I watch too much tv as it is, or tape too much - one or the other. I really don't need more tv. Which is why I'm never getting a tivo or streaming internet device. Seriously Girl with the Dragon Tatoo - the Daniel Craig/David Fincher version- has been sitting on my tv stand for two months now courtesy of netflix - this is pathetic.) ITV does not exist in my world. PBS stations in the US have different programming per state. Also each state gets different programming for some cable stations apparently. Plus, I don't get Showtime, Starz or Cinemax, and no access for British series that aren't on BBCAmerica or local PBS. And can't watch tv on the computer.
This basically means all the Brit/UK/European series that have not sold rights to US channels, aren't available. So, no, sorry, haven't seen InBetweeners, Misfits (past S1 which was sent to me by a friend in Austria), Almighty Johnsons, Merlin S4 or is it 5 (until it is on BBCAmerica). Nor have I seen Dexter S7 or Homeland yet.
That said you can download tv shows from Amazon and itunes. But who needs that? I already have a DVR that is 42% full. I can literally do a marathon of Revolution episodes. (I only saw the first one...haven't seen the rest yet)
Co-worker: Have you seen Revolution?
Me: the first episode. Why has it gotten better?
Co-worker: got great critical reviews.
Me: really? People have universally panned it, I thought.
Co-Worker: Well you can't trust People.
Me: What? No...I meant "people" generally, not the magazine "PEOPLE".
7. In 2nd Poll that contained Grimm, Doctor Who (which is technically over for 2012 so doesn't quite count and falls under same category as Mad Men and Breaking Bad), Teen Wolf (I was curious who was watching this - personally I've never seen it so can't comment on it), and Sons of Anarchy.
The Winner is...Doctor Who. (No surprise there.) With Dowton Abbey and Grimm following in 2nd and 3rd place. Co-worker would be pleased, he loves Grimm. (This is NOT the coworker who loves Breaking Bad. Two different co-workers.) I frankly don't get the appeal of Grimm, it reminded me too much of Supernatural meets Buffy without an interesting (alright hot) lead. I need an interesting (okay.. hot) lead, it's a thing. This guy looks like the guy in Merlin without the charisma. Dean Winchester or Oliver Queen, he ain't.
8. The Reality Show winners were...The Daily Show and The Colbert Report - no surprise there.
In unrelated news...WBTE (wet-behind-the-ears) blogger is about through with BTVS tv series, but not too worry...wbte has (dum..dum..dum) discovered the BUFFY COMICS. Buffy comics fans everywhere can rejoice, or not, as the case may be.
And I'm reading another one of those best-selling porn novels that I swear was once upon a time an Everybody's All Human Buffy fanfic (and ahem, not one of the better ones). It's actually hilarious in places (unintentionally so). I'm possibly the only person who reads these things for the comedic value? I thought 50 Shades of Grey was hilarious. Don't understand the people who took it seriously. How can you possibly take a story that starts with a ditzy heroine signing a Non-Disclosure Agreement to have wild kinky sex? Or for that matter, spends several pages arguing with the hero over email and text messaging regarding a highly confidential BDSM contract? The writer was clearly making fun of the trope. But people got offended and took it seriously. I truly wonder about people. Did they not teach you critical thinking in school? Did you fall asleep during that portion of the lesson?

(Probably should be noted that I'm not a fan of Greenwalt. My least favorite seasons of Buffy and Angel were the ones that Greenwalt wrote or was a co-showrunner for. Buffy s1-3 and Angel S1-3 least favorite. I was a S4-7 Buffy fan, and a S4-5 Angel fan. Weird, I know, but there it is. And Greenwalt's two other series didn't work for me, for more or less the same reasons.)

I'll confess that the only reason I watch Partners because I really like David Krumholtz and Michael Urie (the latter was the snarky gay guy on 'Ugly Betty'). The show's writing is kind of un-funny, but I'm watching for those two performances anyway....(I'm hoping it will get better).
Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is pretty intense, but beautifully filmed & acted... and I found it to be really absorbing (something that will draw you in, I think, no matter what your mood is).... I'm actually looking forward to your review of it.

So I think that is the deal with CW, it doesn't have any local physical stations and satellite never managed to pick it up anywhere (although cable does carry CW).

Yep, remember the weirdness of the midwest. When I was living in KC - it was difficult to get certain channels. I moved to NYC before Buffy started and WB came in fine. UPN not as well. In fact I ended up getting basic/standard cable so I could get UPN and USA.
CW - if you have a decent internet, you can watch its tv shows online.
They are offered free. But Arrow is no Breaking Bad - it's not worth the time and effort. It's a fun show, but not...well a Breaking Bad or a Buffy or The Wire. More ....like Heroes or Alpha or the Cape or Smallville. ;-) (Although I like it better than the Cape.)

Thanks, because that is the bottom line for me... I will DVR a lot of shows that I'm pretty indifferent about, and I'll end up watching them while I surf the net, cook, sew, clean, or am otherwise distracted.
I only watch shows online that I LOVE and will give my undivided attention to (because I cannot surf the net while watching online, my internet provider is too weak/slow/annoying).
So if at any point Arrow becomes 'must see TV' then I'll rent the DVD (or whatever) and catch up on it... but right now it just seems like a myriad of other shows... and I'm not missing that much.

Copper does take watching closely and I have not been in that mood lately, so we have a bunch on the dvr.
The New Normal is getting better. They have toned down Nene Leeks character and are maybe figuring out the chemistry of who works well together. I do adore the more flamboyant of the two main characters; he is just cute as can be.
We also watch Castle (out of some misplaced loyalty to Nathan Fillian.) Actually, so far IMO this has been the best season. They are playing it more for laughs and just not taking things so seriously. The writing is really not very good (I can usually tell you who the killer is in the first ten minutes or they pull something out of the air,) but this new "not quite serious" way they are writing is working for me.
