I liked 'The Hobbit', though I agree it had a bunch of action scenes added purely for, well, people who like action scenes. However, most of the 'extra' material is from the appendices, not invented by Jackson - the Brown Wizard, the Galadriel and Saruman scenes, etc, though of course PJ has expanded on what is often just a one-liner in the books to a full scene.
The 'giant rock fight' is certainly in 'The Hobbit',though - one reason the dwarfs seek shelter in the goblin-cave is to hide from the stone giants flinging rocks around.
