There are way too many pathetic whiney 'heroines' in literature, it is true, but I've actually admired some in recent novels... okay, not so much great literature... but still: Katniss in Hunger Games is her own person who in spite of a lot of faults manages to accept the role as the face of the revolution, and survive as an individual in incredibly difficult circumstances. I thought she was pretty kick ass. And Lisbeth in Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was incredibly kick ass, starting out terribly damaged and victimized, and managing to become incredibly strong. Not just surviving but figuring out ways to thrive.
And I'm not sure if you read that White Trash Zombie novel, but Angel was a total loser, she had given up and was committing virtual suicide until after she died... and started to get her life on track. Of course it isn't a great book, but she is kind of an amazing character, slowly making something out of herself (getting a life after her death). I thought she was a riot (and fairly kick ass).
I just have hopes of better female lead characters... in books. It is something I alway look for anyway.
