Both writers were daytime serial watchers. And had grown up watching soaps. (I know because Whedon indirectly mentioned a crush on Anna Devane, who was on GH during the 1980s, in a whedonesque post several years back).
Ah. Interesting. I do know, of course, that the Luke/Laura thing came up at the infamous writers' meeting where Marti mooted the AR, with only Jane E protesting that times had moved on since such storylines were acceptable, and Whedon disagreeing with her (though he later used the same storyline to justify the way he wrote Spike/Buffy in season 7, "It would be wrong etc."). I also know that there was the belief that Marti had come to BtVS from soapland, but that turned out to be incorrect.
Anyway, I know I would have hated the male-centric genre take on the AR. We would have ended up with Death Wish, or something like. I did at the time fear that was what we were going to get, though.
