They've set Bae up pretty well as a character with lots of obstacles and issues to work with upon entering the story.
Getting to know his son (which he would want, and which will motivate him to make the effort).
Dealing with Emma (who does have a legitimate reason to be PISSED and hurt and distrustful of him).
Dealing with his father (who HE has legitimate reasons to be pissed, hurt and distrustful of).
And honestly, someone needs to punch Pinnochio.
