Happy Holidays, Joyeux Noel, Winter Solistice or Whatever You Celebrate!

Having a rather lovely holiday down south - the weather much like the rest of the east coast has fluctuated between 75 degrees and 40 degrees. Today it is 41. Nothing to complain about since it's about 37 degrees in Arizona and areas of Texas. Also we didn't get the nasty weather that Maine, a good portion of the Midwest, and Britain (specifically Wales) received - according to the newspaper this morning.

Yesterday, saw the film Philomena with my mother at a small, rather comfy art theater on the island.
It's a lovely film, written and produced by Steven Coogan (who also stars in it alongside Judi Dench) and is directed by Stephen Frears. Lives up to all of the critical acclaim it has received. Rather funny in places, and oddly never quite falls into sentimentality (which these types of films often are in the danger of doing.) The story is based on The Lost Child of Philomena Lee by Martin Sixsmith, which tells the true story of Philomena Lee's 50-year-long search for her son. The book focuses more, as the title suggests, on the life Michael/Anthony had after his adoption...while the film focuses more on Philomena Lee and Martin Sixsmith's relationship and their search for her missing child. Even though Philomena references the Magdalene Laundries - where unwed mothers were forced to clean and sew, while their children were sold, by the nuns allegedly caring for them. But the film does not ravage the Catholic Church or blame the faith. It never dissolves into moralizing or self-righteous sermonizing, instead it presents a simple human interest story, and an often humorous one, allowing the viewer to come up with their own answers. A quietly funny film in an otherwise boisterous season, highly recommended.

Xmas has been lovely. Hope yours is as well.
