Gaslight was originally a play by the British novelist and dramatist Patrick Hamilton (who also wrote Rope, filmed by Hitchcock) - it was revived a year or two ago on the London stage and is still very compelling (ditto Rope, there was clearly a brief Hamilton moment). Okay, it did have the amazing Rosalind Pike in the lead, which helped!
