Stressed out of my mind today. Adrenalin pumping, knees tittering, edgy...why? Have a job interview tomorrow and it's a long shot. A real long shot - they've received over 350 resumes, already have several canididates on their third interviews, when they noticed my resume and gave me a call. So it's all very much last minute and they want to make a decision by the end of the week.
Not high-paying, but very challenging and interesting position - also located in mid-town Manhattan where I want to work. It would expand on my contractual negotiation skills, pull in dispute resolution and collective bargaining and allow me to help performers and artists. It also has room for growth. But alas it is a long shot. Trying not to get excited about it or to want it too much. The job hunt emotional rollercoaster ride begins anew. (sigh). Have to bring writing samples, references, and fill out application (hate applications).
The other thing I'm mildly stressed about is I got a call back from an unpaid internship I applied for. It's an opportunity to help market and publicize a rock video's release on DVD. I have to call the guy back sometime tomorrow morning - prior to running off to my interview which is at 10:30 am. What's that old saying? When it rains it pours? ;-)
So dealing with the stress by indulging in my current guilty pleasure of reading fanfic. Found a halfway decent Everybody's Human fic called "speedway". Does a good job exploring the human characters: Dawn, Connor, Spike, Cordelia, Xander, Giles and Joyce. (Do not recommend it for anyone invested too heavily in Angel, Darla, Willow - it would piss you off. Anya? Great for Giles/Anya shippers.)
It's basically a story about a stock car driver. You could change all the names and publish it - no problemo. Outside of the writers tendency to overuse "the blond" said or "the brunette " wondered in lieu of names (my new pet peeve, it's written fairly well.) Again don't recommend for anyone who is invested in Angel or hates B/S as a couple. Very pro B/S.
Also pro Cordy/Xander. Nice thing about fanfic - is it is a) free, b) nice escape and c) usually somewhat spicy. And since I recently stopped caring about canon for anything produced on TV ...for reasons that have more to do with Television medium and how TV is produced and run, than anything else, alternate universe fanfic works for me.
Now I could never read it for books or movies. But TV? No problemo. So hence the guilty pleasure. This guilty pleasure keeps me somewhat sane in between job hunt roller-coaster rides.
Anyways off...to read more and finish devising questions for tomorrow's interview. Wish me luck. I think I need it.

Date: 2003-09-28 12:38 pm (UTC)I once tried to read a story by the same writer who wrote Speedway, but she kept describing Spike's eyes as "cerulean orbs" so I had to bail, but then I have a very low tolerance for purple.
Thanks and on fanfic
Date: 2003-10-01 02:33 pm (UTC)The internship involves working an industry party with all sorts of celeb's in attendence. Mucho nervous, having never done this before. But a great crash course in marketing/promoting a DVD/Movie Release. It's all about finessing the image. (the DVD is The Kids Are Alright - a 1970s rockumentary on The Who).
On the fanfic? You are right about the author of speedway.
I was able to ignore some of this until about chapter 30, where it started getting on my nerves, ie. how many different shades of blue can his eyes be? Why can't you just say "eyes"? (fear of repetition obviously). And of course the complete dissing of the characters of Darla, Fred and Angel whom the writer obviously despises - in places it's even out of character for the characters in the story. (almost as if the writer is using h/ir story to work out h/ir rage against those characters... although why she hates Angel, Darla and Fred so much? (shrug)).
Haven't heard back on job yet. Should know by end of week.
Did get three interviews though.
