* Read that on Face Book and decided, yup, I have that. Between my Kindle and my boxes of books here and in Hilton Head, I've got something that offends everyone. I'd say I hide them, and to an extend I do with the Kindle, but I also tell people what I'm reading...even if it will turn them off and send them screaming into space.
It's nice to feel I've accomplished something compulsively collecting books.
In other book news...a conversation about a book that my mother has rec'd to me and she's currently re-reading.
Mother: The characters are tortured in this novel. Both the hero and heroine go through hell.
Me: Okay.
Mother: He's whipped, branded numerous times, raped and beaten. She's manacled to a fence and forced to watch him being branded, beaten and whipped within an inch of his life until she agrees to freely give herself to the men. Then she's gang raped and beaten by various men. It's really gruesome - they rip his back open.
Me: Hmmmm...I sort of wish you told me that before I bought the book. Because I'm not sure I want to read any of that.
Mother: Well it's not explicit, and it is only one section of the book. And it shows how both are survivors. It's glamorized or erotica like a lot of modern books nor explicit like they are. And not nearly as hard as watching Deadwood or Hell on Wheels.
Me: True, violence in books is easier to read - in part because you can skim over it.
You aren't forced to witness all the gritty detail. While in movies and tv shows? Eh not so much. Although I've been known to fast-forward.
* Downside of new apt is people above and next to me have this tendency to bang about.
The people behind my armchair or the living room wall - felt the need to build something today. Bang, Bang, Bang all morning and afternoon. This evening the people above me are wandering loudly about. And the distant murmur of tv and phones ringing occasionally. Makes me miss the brownstone, although it had its noise issues - mainly from the street. Don't you just wish you could wave a magic wand and mute everyone? Or at the very least were as quiet as I am. Dang it. I barely tromp about. Always barefoot or in socks. And I have the tv off a lot or on low volume. Also, not a fixer-upper - so no annoying hammering and sawing.
* On TV front:
I've changed my mind about Revenge. It has careened wildly off the rails.The plot makes no sense and there are various out-of-character moments. Also, they really need to get rid of the character of Charlotte who has gone from mildly annoying to unbearable. No one in this show is likable - except maybe Nolan and possibly Emily.
So, as a result, I spend most of it - either rooting for various characters to die.
Or fast-forwarding.
I may stop watching it. And just let last season be the final. I think it should have ended there.

Date: 2014-10-12 08:12 pm (UTC)Yeah, I tried Outlander. Found it long and the lead characters annoyed me. So gave up 100 pages from the end. (I admittedly skipped ahead, and I also skimmed the sequels in the bookstore.)
