OUAT S4.4 - The Apprentice
Oct. 19th, 2014 10:30 pmI'm actually enjoying this season more than last season - the pacing is slightly better.
And Rumple is a lot more interesting when he's the manipulator. Tonight - the writer's do their own twist on Disney's The Socerer's Apprentice, who isn't quite Mickey Mouse, although he does turn into a mouse, so close enough, I guess. I still think it would have been cool if they could have combined animation with live action, particularly in this scenario.
* Rumple's achilees heel is NOT Belle, as Hook and various people think, but Henry. Rumple and Regina have that in common. Henry is their undoing. Last season they both put themselves and their magic on the line for Henry, and were willing to pretty sacrifice everything for him. Rumple can manipulate Belle...and while he hates the prospect of losing her, Henry is different, Henry is Baelfire's son - and Rumple sacrificed Belle to be rejoined with Baelfire, just as he left Belle to save Henry.
So...the twist at the end of this episode reminds me again of the prophecy that Henry will be Rumple's undoing. It all comes back to the parent/child relationships.
Here, Rumple, somewhat unwisely, makes Henry his apprentice. With the Fantasia soundtrack playing in the background. Not quite sure why Regina agreed to this - she knows how dangerous Rumple is - but she also knows that he'd stab himself with his own dagger before he'd hurt Henry. So perhaps that's why?
* Rumple wants to use the Hat to get rid of the dagger's power over him, yet keep the power. He wants his cake and eat it too. Except the hat doesn't just remove another's powers, it also takes them body and soul into the hat.
Rumple justifies his actions with the claim that everyone is the same as he. That no one can change, everyone has that darkness inside them. Yet, most have better self-control, Rumple.
* I'm wondering if Will Scarlett will become the new competitor for Emma? They seem to be building a relationship between the two of them. And he feels like a replacement for Baelfire. Will and Baelfire are similar in some respects. And he's definitely her type. Hope not, not a fan of love triangles - they annoy me.
* Rather liked the trick that Rumple played on Hook - that the hand would make him do wicked things. Except all it did was give his subconscious permission to access that dark side of him. Rumple states - you haven't changed entirely, beneath the surface lurks the ruthless pirate - who will do whatever it takes to get what he wants.
Poor Killian. I actually liked it when Killian had the upper hand. But fear not Killian, Henry may be able to help.
* The costume department continues to ...ahem, not disappoint, in the creation of horrific female dresses which look like they've been raided from Walt Disney World or Barbie's Dream House. Seriously - did they hire the same team that makes the dresses for Walt Disney World or Barbie? That pink dress that Emma wore on her date...did not flatter her. And I could not imagine the character picking it. What happened to the sexy dress she wore on her date in the first episode of S1?
* Anna's back story surprised me - I thought Rumple stashed her somewhere. But no, she made it back to Erendale and Christoph intact. (Every time they say Erendale - I think of Lord of the Rings). So...this begs the question, what happened to Anna and when? And why do I think the Snow Queen is involved?
* Also, the Snow Queen, apparently came over to Storybrook in much the same way that Regina, Emma, Pinnochio, Killian and Neal did - not cursed. She got around it somehow.
Which means she may have been wandering about the outside world or she came over after the curse had been lifted?
* I see a major romantic breakup between Hook and Emma...coming up. They'll either bring out Killian's dark side through the Snow Queen, now that Rumple has already sowed the seeds, or she'll find out what he's been doing with Rumple via Henry.
The fact that they are together now - and apparently have taken the place of the Snow White/Charming ship or Neal/Emma ship...which kept getting broken up, it will happen.
[I like them together - found Emma/Neal to be more interesting, less predictable and less cliche, but I'm flexible. The actor who plays Killian is admittedly more sexy than Michael Raymond James and a lot more invested in playing the role, let's face it MRJ seemed stoned most of the time. I wish they'd cast Baelfire better, but it can't be helped.]
At any rate...this season has turned out to be more interesting than I'd expected. Pleasantly surprised. There's admittedly less of David and Snow, but that sort of works. I'd grown a bit tired of their romance.
