After doing the scary movie meme, thought it was only fitting to do a scary or horror book meme, in lieu of the Wed Reading Meme and in honor of All Hallows Eve or Samhain, the Wiccan/Pagan Holiday that predates Christianity.
1. Best Ghost Stories
* The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson, which is arguably her best.
* Ghost Story by Peter Straub
* The Collected Ghost Stories of M.R. James
* The Turn of the Screw by Henry James
[I read the Shining but didn't find it that scary for some reason.]
2. Best Sci-Fi Horror Tales
* Grass by Sherri Teppar - the aliens are truly creepy in this novel, and haunting.
* Ship of Fools by Richard Russel - about an alien menace on a ship, rivals alien, but more mysterious and psychologically unnerving. The protagonist is a dwarf and an anti-hero.
* The Sparrow by Maria Doria Russell
* Invasion of the Body Snatchers by Jack Finney
* Under the Skin by Michael Faber
3. Best Occult Horror Tales
* The Monkey's Paw by WW Jacobs
* The Witches of Worm by Zelda Keatley Snyder
(This is a YA novel and by far the creepiest)
* Harvest Home by Tom Tyron (most likely out of print)
* The Secret History by Donna Tartt
* Waking the Moon by Elizabeth Hand
4. Best Vampire Novels
* Interview with a Vampire by Anne Rice
* Dracula by Bram Stoker
* Salem's Lot by Stephen King
(drawing a blank here - most are urban fantasy - and not scary)
5. Best Mad Scientist
* Frankenstein by Mary Shelly
* The Island of Doctor Moreau by HG Wells
* The Invisible Man by HG Wells
* The Strange Case of Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde - by Robert Louis Stevenson
* Breed by Chase Novak (parents are desperate to have children so get an interesting treatment in Eastern Europe, with horrific results)
6. Best Slasher/Serial Killer/Psycho Novels
* Silence of the Lambs by Robert Harris
* The Sculptress by Minette Walters
What are yours???
