1. Once Upon a Time

Anyone still watching this? Or did everyone who was flee to Tumblr? (Honestly don't understand the appeal of Tumblr - it's just throwing images around. I guess if you aren't a writer and don't like reading, and just want to look at pictures - it makes sense. Although as a former copyright specialist whose job it was to obtain rights to content and images, tumblr amuses me. Because apparently the moment you post to tumblr - you grant them the rights to redistribute your images at will. In short, copyright falls out the proverbial window. I found that out when I read the rules. Because of Tumblr, Facebook and Pinterest - copyright of images has been weakened.)

Anyhow...the plot isn't quite working for me. Lots of logical inconsistencies. Up until this arc, the plot tracked, now...hmmm...it's like they have an author re-writing the characters and script and rules of the verse. They may lost a lot of viewers doing this.
I'm still watching to see if they can write themselves out of this. But I'm not so sure.

1. Emma. Okay, the character is hardly pure of heart. Also, she's tend to be more skeptical of magical things. Keep in mind she was a professional thief in a former life, then a bounty hunter (they aren't known for being fluffy puppies), and she gave up her child while in prison.

Now, they trying to convince me that her heart will turn black after saving Henry from Cruella Du Ville, who appeared to be about to kill him? Just because, Cruella was in reality defenseless, but no one including Emma knew this bit of information at the time she confronted Cruella - while Cruella held Henry at gunpoint on the edge of a cliff?
Seriously? And also, Cruella didn't necessarily have to actively take Henry's life, she could have just accidentally nudged him off the cliff. So Emma's act was hardly dark.
And, let's keep in mind that the story made it abundantly clear that Cruella was not exactly redeemable. She wanted revenge on the author for making it impossible for her to take a life, even though she desperately wanted to.

2. Gold. He's heart is hollow and dark, and he's just now figuring this out? Also, how exactly do you save your heart by hurting everyone around you and destroying the love of your son's life? Doesn't that darken it further?

And we're supposed to believe Gold has become really dark again because of what Zelena did to him. Then why is he working with and helping Zelena? You'd think he'd want her dead.

3. Snow and Charming - okay, so we're told before Snow kills Regina's mother, her heart is pure as snow. And we see that it is pretty pure. But later we're told she's done something far worse than kill Regina's mother. Something that is rather horrific.
She removed choice of good and evil from two kids? Except neither kid exhibits horrible or good traits exclusively.

Snow and Charming use as proof the fact that Emma would neither choose to do what they did to protect her child because she's the savior. (No, she wouldn't do it because it's stupid and makes no logical sense. You're putting people in danger making anyone completely dark. Especially the child of a powerful fairy who can turn into a dragon.
This was seriously dumb move. It's also rather horrific, and I'm sorry not comparable to what Emma did protecting Henry from Cruella.)

4. Regina. Actually Regina's arc is the only one that is working for me at the moment. Her's and Robin's. Also to a degree Hook's. I rather liked Regina asking Belle to help her get Gold to back off, and let her save Robin from Zelena.

Everyone else feels a wee bit off-kilter. And I'm not sure the plot makes much sense.
Which is a problem, because up to now, that's what Once had going for it - interesting and decent plotting. It certainly wasn't the cheesy dialogue.

Not sure where they are going with this.

2. MAD MEN is plodding along. No where near as interesting as last season. I'm waiting to see if it picks up steam. Right now, we're just spending a lot of time on Don Draper's sexual escapades, along with Roger's. The best parts of the show were really the business dealings, and the hollow world of advertising. The soap opera or sexual escapades of the characters - I found to be sort of boring, and I like soap operas.

Yes, show, we know Don Draper is a manwhore who uses sex to escape himself. Can we move on please?

Megan's rant about how Don ruined her life didn't work for me. Megan ruined her own life.
As Harry put it - she shouldn't have quit her soap for Hollywood, with nothing definite in place. ( A lot of Soap Opera actors do this. Few succeed. The ones who have? Julianne Moore, Richard Thomas, Kathleen Turner, Meg Ryan, Alec Baldwin, Marisa Tomai, Nathan Fillion, Sarah Michelle Gellar, amongst a few others here and there. But for everyone that succeeds, most fail. ) Also Megan didn't really work on her marriage - she just took off to LA. Of course, at the time, it looked like Don wanted to start the office out there. So...there was that.

She was right about one thing though - Don is at heart a liar. And a hollow soul. Interesting that he gave her a million dollars and all the furniture in his apartment. It seems his ex-wives get everything in his divorces. Oh well, maybe she'll stop asking for money now.

Betty, his other ex-wife, told him she was going back to school to become a psychologist.
(LOL! I had the same reaction Don did, that should be interesting for everyone involved.)

We briefly jump over to Peggy and Stan who have mutual and separate flirtations with an photographer. Who Peggy rightfully pegs as a hustler. Stan gets laid. I'm not sure if Peggy does.

Not all that interesting overall.

Yes to everything you state above. That's exactly why I'm still watching the series. (Although as an aside, I still think the writers goofed big time in killing off Baelfire - a lot of good story potential disappeared with that character.)

You don't take away a character's free will in fiction. It just defeats the whole purpose

Exactly. Which is what Snow and Charming, and the author through them, with Lilith and Emma. How can a character be good or evil, if they have no choice?
Which is an interesting concept actually - or exploration of the one-dimensional character. Or characters written as "heroes" and as "villains" with no shades of grey.
The black and white world of children's stories. (The evil queen is well "evil" and dies because she's "evil" or the pure hearted snow white lives happily ever after because she is good. Reminds me of Jessica Rabbit in Roger Rabbit, who tells the detective, I'm not bad, I'm just drawn that way.)

That said, there has always been an unspoken question on this show, if all these people from other realms are story book characters in the Earthverse, did the people we think of as the authors of these stories (Hans Christian Anderson, the Brothers Grimm, Mary Shelley, etc) simply record the story of their lives and choices, or were they authors in the true sense we've always assumed?

It's an interesting question. The difference between a story that is driven by characters or where the characters are pawns of the plot or theme, ie plot-driven.
I've certainly read both.

And it's interesting that the author started out as a "newspaperman" or "journalist" - someone who doesn't control events, but records them. Storytelling did start out as a method of retelling events or keeping an oral history or record.

Also, writers when they create characters - write a story based on what those characters would choose. If they go against what that character would choose, the story feels off somehow.

Example? It makes no sense that Snow and Charming would do what they did with Mal's egg --- and we're told that both along with the Socerer were manipulated into doing it by the "author". So in effect, they didn't choose to do it. Someone made them do it?

Unfortunately, Atp-omn is right, the Zelena/Marian story bit makes no sense.
Nor does Emma's action on the cliff turning her evil make any sense.

Some great ideas, but the execution is unfortunately off. However, like you, I'm hoping they can turn it around. Because I find the ideas really interesting.
