May. 4th, 2015 10:23 pm1. Books: Hmmm...The Locus Sci-Fantasy Ballot has been announced:
http://www.locusmag.com/News/2015/05/2015-locus-awards-finalists/
It's actually more interesting than the Hugo Ballot. And notable for the fact that three of the five Hugo nominated books are on the Best Novel list: Goblin Emperor, Three Body Problem, and Ancillary Sword.
I may ignore the HUGO's and just explore the books on that list. Recommend others do the same. No crazy people involved.
In other book news, I need to figure out how to set up an "Author's Page" on Good Reads.
Can't decide if I should wait until the Book is actually published to do it. I'm already on Good Reads, so shouldn't be that hard. Once I do, I may start a book blog on it. And just cross-post entries from here.
2. Television:
* Outlander - relatively similar to the books. Although, a whole lot tighter, also more active. They change things which drug or bogged down the story. Claire also is more "active" in the television series and less "passive". Both characters are a heck of a lot more likable. I didn't like them all that much in the books, but here I do.
There's a problem though...the writers of the television series seem to share the author of the book's view that the best way to push characters and plot forward is through sexual violence. There is more "other" action in the series. In the books, the only action was saving people from rape, and often far too late.
Okay, I spoke too soon -- they changed a few things in this episode. In the book, they spend a lot of time wandering around Lallybroch and bonding with his sister and her husband. Then he's caught and taken to Jack Randall and to the prison, and she has to find a way to rescue him. Here, another group comes in and takes them prisoner at their home. Jenny and Ian are less prominent. Which admittedly is more active and suspenseful.
The book drug.
* Once Upon a Time
Well, it keeps surprising me, I'll say that much. Did not expect the plot to go in that direction.
And they appear to have fully redeemed Regina, who has finally figured out that a happy ending doesn't mean having someone to love you, but getting out of your own way. Being content with what you have, and those around you. And solving problems together.
Robin isn't her happy ending, he's just part of it. And she doesn't need the author to write her one, she can write her own. Yay, Regina has grown up.
Rumple not so much. He still wants to manipulate the world to give him what he wants.
Also the author seems to be intent on helping him -- possibly because he's a bored writer who wants power over the characters. Heck, he's been locked inside a book for all this time.
Rather liked what they did with Lily and Malificient. The Previews are misleading for this series. They lead me to believe that there was going to be a huge revenge plot.
But not so much. Actually, it was just Mal asking Snow and Charming for help with her daughter. And Emma deciding to forgive them.
Regina got around the whole turning the Savior Dark dilemma, by taking Lily's blood instead. After all - all they needed was dark Savior blood, which was in Lily. No need to turn Emma dark. Regina has gotten brighter as the story progresses, while Gold/Rumple has gotten dumber. Interesting. She's actually learning from her mistakes and finding other solutions, while Rumple just keeps making the same ones. I think the whole thing with Selena and losing his kid, set him back a bit. Personally, I think they should have killed Belle off instead of Neil. Belle is boring, no storyline potential, and the actress is atrocious in the role -- she takes simpering to a whole new level. (I loved that character, and OUAT has ruined her. She should have been more like Ana in Frozen, plucky.)
Regina also figured out what to do with Selena, just lock her up until she has the kid, then take the kid away from her and give her "restricted" visitation rights.
Not sure about next week's OUAT. It appears instead of having the villains win, they are merely flipping the Heros and Villians? OR since the previews are always misleading, maybe having the villains win means just flipping the characters, so Snow/Charming still win, they are just villains this round? (I like that idea, that would be hilarious, but I doubt the writers are that clever.)
Good Wife -- last night's episode is the best that I've seen in a while. Hmm, they appear to be rebooting the series again. Sort of needs to be rebooted.
