How to know you are a writer? You spend all day long writing at work, only to come home and do the same thing.

Was re-reading a novel I wrote in my 20s, and well, not all that good. Great ideas, but I hadn't found my writing style or voice quite yet. Did that writing on the internet. I just played with various styles, and grabbed the one that felt the most comfortable.

Most important thing about writing style is "voice" or the writer finding their own voice or unique style. Otherwise you just sound like everyone else. You need to stand out, let yourself be heard.

Currently playing around with science fiction novel that I wrote ages ago. I even had an outline of the entire world. Plus a character synopsis and plot outline. It was a massive understaking. Science Fiction is a massive undertaking. So too is fantasy.
You have to keep track of your rules, metaphors, world-building, and plot. Lots of balls to keep in the air. Probably explains why a lot of sci-fantasy is not all that good -- it's hard to write the genre well. You're bound to drop at least one of the balls. Most science fiction writers drop the "character" ball, the characters fall flat. Others drop the plot or world-building ball. It's always something.

I was trying to read Anne Leckie's Ancilliary Justice, but her writing style isn't working for me at the moment. So have decided to go back to it at a later point. Might try John Scalzi's Red Shirts instead or go back to JA Corey Expanse series. Although I'm still enjoying my re-read of the Illona Andrews Kate Daniels series. I like the snarky one-liner's. Andrews is a witty writer. And I need humor right now in my fiction.

Heard that Kim Stanley Robinson wrote humorous sci-fi years ago, but I haven't found it. Red Mars does not look humorous to me.
