Buffy Poll as a meme
Jun. 25th, 2015 10:10 pmSo I took this:
http://www.buzzfeed.com/caitlinjinks/buffy-forever#.cpqbZ382Ke
And now I'm going to do it as a meme, or try to, memory is sketchy these days, too much information is being stored in it. In short, I'm commenting on the fun poll and my choices, along with their choices.
1. Which is the Best Season of Buffy?
Well the only one that I enjoy re-watching is S5.
Seasons 1-3 are frankly too young for me - they concentrate on high school, and I've seen it done one too many times. The whole high school thing was a-okay, but I can scarcely remember high school and it just isn't that interesting.
There were a few stand-out/memorable episodes in S2 and S3, but overall nothing to write home about. I certainly didn't become obsessed until around S4 and S5.
(The standouts were: Passion, Innocence, Becoming I & II, Dopplegangland, and possibly...
The Wish (although that's a typical television trope).)
Season 4 - had the most stand-out ground-breaking, quality episodes, but its plot arc left me cold. It was hard to care about the increasingly cliche "The Initiative".
However - the season does have the gutsy and ground-breaking episodes: Hush, Restless, and Who are You. I did not like Superstar and there are a few episodes that I struggled to watch in that season.)
Season 6 and 7 were also gutsy seasons, with a few ground-breaking episodes (Once More With Feeling, Lies My Parents Told Me, Conversations with Dead People, and the last 15 minutes of Beneath You...but, other than that both seasons are a bit of a mess. They also contained some episodes that I find difficult to watch or rewatch.)
Season 5 - just resonated the most over the years, and it had at least two-three ground-breaking or notable episodes: Fool for Love (which is actually a lot better than Lies My Parents Told Me), and The Body. I liked the plot arc and metaphors more in this season than S4. And there isn't really any episodes in it that I found hard to rewatch. Also Dawn was interesting in this season, as were all the characters. They were also all likable.
At the end of the day, it's subjective. (The majority of people taking the poll picked S3)
2. Who is the best character from the original Scooby Gang?
Willow. I just found her the most complex and interesting.
(Right now it's a tie between Willow and Buffy in the poll. I admittedly jump between the two.)
3. Who is the best recurring female character?
Anya. She was by far the most developed. I found Tara to be the least developed, unfortunately. (The poll agrees with me)
4. Who is the best recurring male character?
Spike. Again by far the most developed on Buffy. (Angel didn't get developed until he jumped over to Angel, and he didn't make me laugh, Spike made me laugh. I like characters who make me laugh.) (The poll agrees with me.)
5. Who is the most underrated male character?
Wesley Wyndam-Price. (Although only on Buffy, he's not underrated at all on Angel. I probably should have picked Jonathan. I can't stand the others.)
Andrew is winning the poll. (Apparently there are a lot of Andrew fans. Andrew unfortunately did not make me laugh, he made me cringe.)
6. Who is the most underrated female character?
I chose Joyce. (Yes, I adore Drusilla, but she is hardly underrated. She stole the show more than once.) Joyce was a quiet presence that you didn't miss or understood her worth until she was gone. Also quite complex, but in a quiet way.
7. Which character is your least favorite?
For me -- it was a hard decision, had to choose between Parker Abrhams and Kathy Newman.
Decided to go for Parker...if only for the toilet seat comment. Despicable character, albeit interesting writing choice.
I'd have chosen Andrew if he had been an option or Robin Wood. Actually Andrew is my choice -- my least favorite character is Andrew. (Close second is Principal Robin Wood.)
(Whoever created this poll...is not all that good with their options. Snyder was way more interesting and far better performed than Wood, who felt contrived.)
Weirdly the poll is choosing Dawn. (Seriously?? That character was far more developed than Andrew. Or Wood. And actually moved the story forward in a productive manner. I never really understood the Dawn hate. I was sort of ambivalent.)
8. Which Once More with Feeling Song do you love the most?
Rest in Peace - it has the best lyrics. I like Walk Through Fire...but it's not quite as clever.
9. Who is the Greatest Big Bad?
Eh, it's always hard for me to choose. Spike and Dru were the most fun. Angelus was the most melodramatic. But I thought Mayor Richard Wilkins was by far the most clever and in some respects deadly. He sort of was an overarching big bad -- in the background during the first two seasons. Also I think he was the most developed and complex of the big bads. All the others were somewhat one-dimensional, ie. EVIIIIL. But Mayor Wilkins was a man who sold his soul, and had layers - he loved Faith as a daughter, was weirdly kind at times, and far less predictable.
The poll picked Dark Willow...which is interesting. With Glorificus and Angelus tied for second, the First Evil in Third Place (seriously, the First Evil?), and Spike and Dru just below Mayor Wilkins and above the Master, rounded out by Caleb and then Adam.
I disagree with poll. My ranking?
1. Mayor Wilkins and Angelus tied in first
2. Spike and Dru
3. Faith
4. Dark Willow
5. Warren Miers (if you can put Caleb on this list...)
6. Glorificus/Ben
7. Adam
8. The First Evil
9. The Master
10. Caleb
10.) Who is the Best Minor Villian?
I put Vampire Willow, who was more interesting than Dark Willow actually and had more layers. Although, the Gentleman is a close second. (So the poll and I agree there.)
I disagree with the pollster though on the Trioka/Warren Miers - they actually were a bigger villain than Caleb and far more disruptive. They did by far the most damage.
Also I'd have ranked Sunday above Dracula. (Seriously, Dracula? Oh bit of trivia, the guy who played Dracula on Buffy, also played Sarah Michelle Gellar's love interest on the soap opera All My Children. They did lots of fake sex scenes on that show together.
And he was playing Dracula in a Made For TV miniseries that aired shortly afterwards. Okay, why is it that I can remember that but not the mathematical rules of operation?)
11.) Which couple gives you the most feels?
Buffy and Spike. I was pretty much ambivalent about most of the romantic relationships on the series. I did love Giles and Jenny though. Dang it. Also had a certain fondness for Xander and Anya, although their constant bickering got on my nerves. There's banter (Spike and Buffy) and annoying bickering (Xander and Anya, Xander and Cordelia.)
The poll voted for Tara and Willow with Buffy and Angel next. (Sigh.) Tara and Willow...they were interesting, but I knew they were doomed. Whomever was romantically tied to Willow was dead. Didn't matter who it was. OZ escaped by a hair.
So I never emotionally invested myself in Willow's relationships. Buffy and Angel I liked up until S4, then I just got bored. Too melodramatic. I actually felt more with Giles and Jenny, which is at the bottom of the poll.
12.) Who do you ship Buffy with?
Spike. (Apparently the poll agrees with me -- at least for the moment.) Although at the moment? No one. The writers finally sold me on the fact that this relationship wasn't going anywhere in Angel S5. And the characters had for intents and purposes begun to move on. (Yeah I know what the comics are doing -- but I decided the comics were fanfic and not canon to the series way back in S8, when they didn't follow the continuity of the series and did crack fic plot threads. Also, different medium. )
13.) Which death had the greatest impact on you?
Joyce Summers. (The poll agrees, although why 10% say Buffy? She didn't exactly die, how could it have an effect? And you had to know she was coming back the next season. I sort of wish she hadn't come back and just did a lengthy cameo as the Buffy Bot, because that would have been interesting to explore in greater depth. Although they'd have lost 80% of the fans. And the network wouldn't have gone for it. Vamp Diaries this wasn't, it was Buffy the Vampire Slayer - if Buffy is gone, it is no longer Buffy the Vampire Slayer. They could permanently kill everyone but Buffy off. That's the problem with lead character driven tv shows, as opposed to ensembles, you're stick with that lead character.)
14.) Which quote is the most memorable?
I went with "The hardest thing in this world is to live in it. Be Brave. Live."
Although to be honest? It's not the most memorable. The most memorable are:
If the apocalypse comes? Beep Me.
Out for a Walk, Bitch.
Bunnies, Bunnies, it must be Bunnies!
The earth is doomed.
Guess which won in the poll? Give up?
Out for a Walk, Bitch. (Which makes sense, it is admittedly the most memorable.)
In second was the one I chose.
[Fortunately..."I'm cookie dough, I'm not done baking" was in dead last...worst line ever. Well, next to, "If I knew you were coming, Slayer, I'd have baked you a cake." Note to writers - don't use the word baking in a line of dialogue ever again.]
15) Which Season Finale was the Greatest?
I picked Restless - because it was the most interesting and ground-breaking. Even if it managed to confuse 90% of the audience. (I almost picked Becoming Part II - which was the most fun to watch and had the best lines.)
The poll interestingly enough picked The Gift. (Which I thought was a problematic episode.)
Apparently I remembered more than I thought.
