Date: 2016-05-21 04:38 pm (UTC)Long expanse?? LOL. It's like 25 miles on the turnpike. What did you do, drive by way of Atchison? As a Missouri graduate, I wouldn't want to falsely insinuate you wanted to get out of Lawrence just as fast as possible. ;o)

Date: 2016-05-21 10:35 pm (UTC)All I know is it took an hour from Prairie Village, Kansas to Lawrence. I don't know what that translates in miles.
But an hour in a car is torture, from my perspective. I'd rather be on a train or subway, because at least you can read.
This does however explain why I hated the trip from Lawrence to Liberty, Mo which, ahem, was longer. As was the one from Kansas City to Topeka, and Kansas City to Wichita. Can I tell you how much I do NOT miss driving, or for that matter Kansas? NYC is heaven, no driving, mountains nearby, beach nearby, unlimited sources of theater, tons of trees, and you can ignore sporting events.

Date: 2016-05-21 11:46 pm (UTC)My grandfather lived about 50 miles north of Wichita so I know how 'exciting' Kansas driving can be. Driving across Kansas from there on west into Colorado is a good way to get into country music on the radio, cause the scenery isn't going to keep you awake.

Date: 2016-05-21 11:53 pm (UTC)We listened to a lot of NPR and tapes. I had a lot music cassettes back then that I'd play instead of the radio.
Didn't realize the route was more direct from Kansas City, Missouri than Prarie Village (Johnson County), you'd think it would be the opposite? Took about 30 minutes to get to the highway and an hour from there. So almost two hours, close to three.
Weird to think I haven't driven a car in 17 years, considering I used to drive daily and long distances to boot.
