1. Has anyone heard of the fantasy novel - An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir? Is it any good? More importantly, would you recommend? (Probably good to keep in mind that my taste swings more towards Le Quinn, Ellen Kushner, Tolkien, JK Rowling, Ronald Dahl, Jim Butcher, Kristin Cashore, Suzanne Collins, GRR Martin and Illona Andrews, and away from Naomi Novick, Roger Zelzany, Cassandra Clare, Stephanie Meyer, Catelynne Valente, Bram Stoker, and Sceanne McGuire.)
There's a lengthy, albeit impossible to read due to the tiny print, story about it in EW. It's about a slave girl named Laia who is infiltrating the ranks of an oppressive regime to rescue her imprisoned brother. They live in an ancient savage realm named Serra - a fusion of Roman and Middle Eastern antiquity and mythology in the story, enforcers in mystical silver masks help the Martial Empire rule over a restless occupied underclass known as Scholars. It's written by an American child of Pakistani immigrants. And the story is inspired by the Kashmiri women whose men had been kidnapped by Indian security agents never to be heard from again.
Sounds fascinating. And a bit different -- at least in setting than most fantasy novels, which all seem to take place in Medieval Northern Europe. (My main quibble with fantasy is they all seem to take place in Medieval Europe, and all feature erstwhile male heroes or klutzy heroines aiming to be beautiful, sword fights, dwarves, dragons and sorcerers.)
2. Politics
Phyllis Schlafly: "We'll get a female American President over my dead body!"
Me: Sorry, not really seeing the problem here. Wait, aren't you already dead...because I sort of forgot you existed.
Washington Post: Phyllis Schafley dead at 92.
Me: Apparently you are. So, not a problem. Universe? Can you take out Palin and Trump next? Actually just Trump would be nice?
Universe: Don't get greedy. Besides I'm enjoying Trump, he's funny.
Me: Universe, you have a sadistic sense of humor.
Universe: Hey, free will -- it's the gift that keeps on giving. Bwhahha.

Date: 2016-09-07 10:13 pm (UTC)People in the US either hate Hillary or Trump. While Trump makes sense, I mean why wouldn't you hate him? He's a monster. But the hate towards Hillary is just nonsensical. There's no proof, and it's all based on nonsensical propaganda.
When it comes to the election, I've decided some people have just lost their minds.
