1. Queen Sugar starring Rutina Westley, amongst others, is a television series that is produced, written, and directed primarily by women, and a diverse group of women from all races and cultures. It focuses on an African American family in Lousiana attempting to save their dead father's sugar plantation, which is in heavy debt. It's not a melodrama or a soap opera, so much as a family drama about how people are struggling with racism, being disenfranchised, and finding their own place in the world. Took me a little while to get into, but it is rather good. And I find it holding my attention. It airs on Wednesday nights on OWN.

2. I've given up on Marvel Agents of Shield finally. For various reasons. The main one being that it sat on my DVR for the last six months and I couldn't be bothered to watch it. It no longer holds my interest and I just don't care what happens to anyone any longer.

3. Woman in Gold - movie starring Ryan Reynolds and Helen Mirren. While the performances are good, the movie is a bit stale and slow. I lost interest during it. I've admittedly grown weary of WWII films. Although the back story of a painting that I've seen in person a few times, was intriguing and it is a striking painting.

4. Star Wars The Force Awakens -- I re-watched this via Showtime. Liked it better the second time I watched it. Possibly because I could rewind and watch the interesting bits again. And hear the dialogue. Often in movie theaters, it's hard to hear the quieter moments or focus on them as well.

I noticed a few things.

* I'm going to miss Harrison Ford, who brought wit and humor to the franchise. No one else really brings it and none of the new characters have either the charisma or the comedic talent Ford did in that regard. He has the funniest lines in the movie. With him gone, not sure how they will remedy it. That was what was missing from the prequels and to a degree from Jedi - the Solo banter and wit.

* General Leia Organa rocks and is probably the toughest character in the series. (What, did Han never marry her? OR did she refuse to take his name? Most likely the latter, not clear.) This character has lost everything she cares about, never turned to the dark side, never ran away, never gave into hate or anger, and kept fighting for the Republic. The true hero of this series is Leia not Luke and not Han, who are basically wimps. First sign of trouble - they flee. She stuck around and handled the shit they left behind for her to clean up. She seems awfully forgiving too - not only of them, but also her idiotic son. (And I rather liked Carrie Fisher's understated performance, she's become a better actress.)

* There's a lot of interesting mysteries, that are character-centric, brought up, that make me want to see more and puzzle through. The mysteries are enough to make you want to re-watch, to see if you missed some clues. Also more than enough to want to see the next one in the series.

- Who is "Rey" and what happened to her family? What is her connection to Skywalker and the Resistence?
-- What happened with Ben Solo, why did he get seduced? Why did Han run away? Why did Luke? And is this connected to what happened with Rey? Is he related to anyone but Solo, Luke, and Leia?
--Who is Finn? Where was he taken from? Who was his family?
-- Who is Po Damon, what is his connection to everyone assuming there is one?

I hope they follow through on some of this. I have hope, since it's Abrhams and he did LOST. But you never know. If they don't, they'll lose my interest.

My gut tells me that Rey and Ben may be related. Or Rey and Po Damon are. If they follow the thread of the first series, it's most likely the later. And they may well be Luke's kids not Leia and Han's.
And Luke may not know about them. Which would be interesting. Another possibility is Rey and Ben are related, and they thought Rey was lost to them - but this makes no sense, since neither Han nor Leia recognized Rey -- of course she was a little girl when her family left, but you always recognize your own child no matter how they've aged or so I'd think. Third possibility is no relation, but there's too many anvils, she has to be related to Luke and/or the core three in some way. Thinking the same about PO Damon who appeared to know Ben.

Finn...maybe Lando Clarissan's son?

Fun to speculate in any event. That's what obsessed me about the first movies...the speculation. For years I wondered what had caused Anakin to become Vader. Then we got the prequels and I was horribly disappointed, mainly because I liked what I'd come up with better. Note to writers - don't give your fans too long to speculate or come up with their own version.

But the mysteries certainly lay the ground-work for a heap of fanfic. I was tempted to write fanfic while watching it.

As women often do...
