Ack! Someone downstairs has either baked chocolat chip cookies or brownies and it smells heavenly. So I have a craving for chocolat chip cookies warm from the oven at midnight? Ugh. The heart-burn. Thankfully I can't go down and get one - it's in the apartment below, methinks, and I barely know them.

Considering posting an incredibly long thing that I've working on, not sure what to call it exactly - not really an essay, sort of a meme. It basically does for ATS what people have been doing for BTVS - it's called the ATS Ranking Meme except with a little twist - I decided to make it a tad more interesting and figure out what the episodes in each category had in common thematically.

"Example: Episode 1: City of ..s2 Judgement, s3 Hearthrob, s4 Deep Down, s5 Conviction

What the episodes have in common? Each episode examines Angel’s state of mind at the beginning of the arc and how he views his situation and the supporting characters with him. What he views their roles to be and their relationship to him. "

Then I go on and analyze why I pick one episode as the best of the bunch and one as the worst of the bunch and why. It's already ten pages long...and I've just made it to episode 12. But, in the process of writing it and thinking it out, I've discovered something sort of interesting - how the writers structure the series and each episode thematically.
In fact - the episodes in each category oddly build on each other and the theme expressed. This is particularly evident on Episode 2 - where I sort of went nuts, because I felt the need to explain my dislike for everyone's favorite episode in that category, and by doing so, I hit upon how the writers approach the idea of distrust and paranoia from several different angles. Yet, something is alluding me in the analysis - in which case, maybe completing it and posting it is a good idea - you never know who will come along and add something. Course by the time I finish this thing, no one will be interested in it because the new episodes will have started. So maybe I should just post what I've already done? And leave the rest for later? That might be the best solution...pondering.

Just so you don't worry about this taking time from my all-important job search, (not that you are...just speaking generally) I'm doing it in between things to blow off frustration or keep myself from pulling my hair out in clumps, job search comes first. Always. Just need to occassionally get away from it, you know? Part of me thinks I shouldn't do that - just work 24/7 on getting a job, but there's only so much you can do. Ugh. The guilt. I know it's not my fault, yet for some reason I keep feeling like it is...very frustrating.

Okay sinus headache coming on - blame the drop in barometric pressure - we're supposed to get snow soon plus frigid temperatures...much fun. Snow in a city is *not* that pretty after it falls - it may be pretty for an hour, and if you're lucky, a day, but after that? You see all the city's grime. It gets yellow and black in places...and you're stepping through it. Methinks I'll hop off to bed now, read a bit, and sleep. Work on this stuff tomorrow. Then again, maybe I'll review and post? Decisions, decisions.

Well I would like to see it -- but I also think that it is easier to read posts in small chunks than in huge ones. Less intimidating to the eye and the nervous system, which has to sit through it all at the computer screen. So I say post what you have. That way you might get some helpful reaction as well that might effect further thought. You can always revise or add later. In any case, you yourself might be too distracted once new episodes start to get back to it in force.

BTW, what is the second episode everyone loves the best that you disagree with?

And where are you up to in Disorderly Knights?

Thanks - that might actually be what I'll do. Post the first 12, and wait to the next group.

BTW, what is the second episode everyone loves the best that you disagree with?

Are You Now or Have You Ever Been? (I wrote why in this analysis thing)

Oh - I had to put Disorderly Knights aside again due to a book club commitment - someone kindly gave me the book we're doing and the author who wrote it will be in attendance this Friday, so I guess I sort of have to read it. (Walk in Shadows by Nicholas Kaufman, a bunch of horror short stories that remind me a lot of the old 1940s Raymond Chandler novels. ) Have read a few of the stories. Lucky for me it's short stories, so I can sort of read both at the same time. Gabriel has just made a deal with Oonaugh, promising her he'll tell Lymond she's dead and won't let Lymond know about the child she is carrying. Gabriel, clever man that he is, figured out the child is Lymond's.

I'll try and post what I have to Atpo sometime this afternoon.

I asked; BTW, what is the second episode everyone loves the best that you disagree with?

You answered: Are You Now or Have You Ever Been? (I wrote why in this analysis thing)

Well I agree with you. Don't like that episode much at all. Whereas I love the Darla arc later in season 2.

I'd have to go with Ground State in Season 4 -- with the Dinza and her chilling line Because you have so much more to lose, and wasn't that true. Also, the very abbreviated Angel/Wes scenes -- all that was fairly memorable although there is some story telling incoherence.

Or Just Rewards in Season 5 with its photographic mirroring of the final scene from Afterlife.

Here is my short post on the similarity of the camera angles of Buffy/Spike to Spike/Fred over at Teaattheford

Well I posted it on ATPO, or the first 12 episodes. Which is long enough - 15 pages, ugh. Nice to know someone else out there isn't fond of Are You Now...;-)

I chose "Just Rewards" over Ground State, although it was a tough decision, because I happen to love Ground State, but Just Rewards is smoother I think.

Read your comparision of Spike/Fred (Just Rewards?) and Buffy/Spike (After Life) camera angles at teaattheford - did not notice that but it makes sense - the writers are comparing the two trajectories. Buffy is pulled from heaven and is brought back, Spike from hell? Or taken before he could go to hell? I think the far more interesting analysis might be the comparision of Spike in Afterlife and Fred in Just Rewards - Spike at the end of S6 goes for a soul - strives towards heaven, does this mean Fred is going in the other direction? Yet, neither necessarily reaches it? ATS always seems to look at the same issues expressed on BTVS but from a darker perspective. Now that's another game - comparing BTVS episodes in each category to ATS episodes...thematically.
