Did this to myself on Friday. Being made aware of it -- is a good thing.

Oh god yes I have - and I have been in therapy and had the therapist say "you wouldn't say to your child self what you say to yourself now, would you?" And I understand that intellectually but then putting it into actual practice, changing my thoughts about myself, has been a whole 'nuther issue....

This reminds me actually of the Hillary Clinton ad I just saw about Trump and how his language affects young girls on a wider cultural level. Whatever your politics there's a truth to it - Trump has been saying nasty stuff for years and always getting a laugh. He exists because we let him, because horrible ideas about the worth of women are out there and deeply believed and felt. He didn't create anything, he just expresses our cultures darkest impulses.

I've gone through therapy for it as well, more than one type. Shutting up the inner critic isn't easy -- so far the only thing that has worked is mindfulness meditation...where you let the negative thoughts float on by like clouds on the horizon. That has worked. Well more or less.

I agree - Trump is a by-product of our ego obsessed culture, where the Bachelor and Bachelorette are top-rated shows, and people spends millions on makeup and plastic surgery. He was inevitable.

There's an article that I posted on lj a while back about how Trump represents America's repressed shadow or dark side. of the soul. And I think that's true. When you confront it, you risk falling into the same behavior patterns.
