Still Star-Crossed
Well, this improves with each episode, and no offense to Shakespeare, but I like it better than the original, Romeo and Juliet. (Although to be fair, R&J is not among my favorite of his plays. I didn't like the leads all that much.)
Oh, and Rebecca Kirsch, the Buffy writer that I keep forgetting the name of, is on the writing staff. She wrote tonight's episode.
I love the actress who plays Rosalind. Actually, I'm fond of several of the characters, Lord Montague, Rosalind, Olivia, Paris, Benevolio and Isabella.
* Poor Rosalind, she and Benevolio keep trying to avoid getting married and keep failing miserably. This round he'd arranged for her to run off and become a nun as she'd always wanted. But apparently not that badly, considering she changes her mind and makes a bargain with her uncle to make her sister Olivia a lady instead. Olivia is not as thrilled about this turn of events as Rosalind thought...mainly because Olivia is enjoying playing servant at the moment, and taking care of a recuperating Paris.
Who in turn is rather enjoying Olivia's attentions. (Juliet, Who? Thinks Paris. I barely knew her. She was beautiful but my father's choice. You're just as lovely. (Actually I think Olivia is much prettier. The actress who played Juliet was rather plain and somewhat bland.)
* This show is beginning to remind me more and more of Reign. We have ghosts!
So possibly Hamlet? It's more Shakespeare than a historical, so yes, ghosts are possible. Juliet is haunting Lord Capulet, and has issued him a warning. He's somewhat relieved, he was worried it was the architect he'd tossed off the scaffolding in the previous episode. (I rather like ASH's subtly in this role. He looks scared but is doing a good job of hiding it.)
* Benevolio...and I really wish they'd pick character names that I can spell. Why are all the male character names impossible to spell on the Montague side. And what's with everyone's names ending in o? Pertchuio. Benevolio. Mercutio. Romeo. Seriously?
Anyhow, apparently much like Rosalind, Bene is involved with someone else. This round a local whore. Also like Rosalind he doesn't really have anyone but the Uncle who hates him and the whore. Rosalind actually has more people, she has her sister, the Aunt and Uncle who despise her (or at least appear to), and the Prince, who insists she marry Bene.
So, actually Bene is in worse straights. The actor is growing on me. He gets more interesting and attractive in each episode.
Hmm...I wonder if the writers borrowed the character Rosalind from As You Like It?
She reminds me a bit of THAT Rosalind. (I like As You Like It more than Romeo and Juliet.)
* So Lord Montague wants the marriage to further his prestige, Lord Capulet to pay off his debts, the Prince and Princess to re-establish the peace. Someone, however, is against it and keeps playing the two families against each other. This individual managed to convince one of the lower level Montague's to blow up the town square during the betrothal ceremony, resulting in the death of one of the ambassadors. (Which could lead to War.)
Bene and Ros join forces to unearth the conspiracy for two reasons -- if they can prove they have a common enemy, then peace can be re-established without their marriage being required. (Hee Plan C. Plan A -- convince Prince to change his mind did not work, Plan B -- become a nun did not work (although she didn't try that hard, needed to protect her sister whether her sister wanted to be protected or required protecting or not), so Plan C --- uncover a villain who wants to do in both families having them unite against a common foe.)
* Olivia, who no longer cares that much about becoming a Lady, is playing footsie with a recuperating Paris. Whose taken a shine to her. She doesn't want to leave Paris.
I can't say I blame her, I wouldn't either.
* Meanwhile Lady Capulet is still trying to figure out what happened to her Daughter. (She committed suicide, you nitwit. It's not rocket science. The priest gave her a poison to fake her own death, when Romeo got the wrong idea and killed himself drinking the poison, Juliet followed suit. This is why the changed that plot point, and didn't have Juliet stab herself. If she had, Lady Capulet may have figured it out a bit faster. Lord Montague figured it out. Lady Montague is clearly dead.)
* Lord Montague keeps shooting arrows at Bene and telling him to straighten up and fly right -- ie. marry Ros with a smile on his face or he might get accidentally shot. I'm not sure why Montague is destroying his courtyard in the process. Does he not like his court-yard?
Oh this show is becoming rather fun.

Date: 2017-06-21 12:38 pm (UTC)It's more a twist on Shakespeare not historical. Again, reminds me a lot of Reign, which also threw the historical bit out the window.
