Hmmm..........interesting bit of gossip

Well, uhm, there are times that I'm not crazy about the internet or a society that provides a bit too much information.
For example? I could live without knowing the inner personal lives of television actors and writers. And I'm not quite sure what to make of Kai Cole's blog post about her marriage to Joss Whedon and subsequent break-up. Goes to show you, it's apparently really hard to stay married in Hollywood or faithful.
Whedon is in his fifties. According to the post, he allegedly had an affair with many of the actresses on the set of Buffy and various other series during his marriage. (I wondering right about now if that would explain his relationship with Eliza Dusku?) I already know that Boreanze did the same thing. In fact Charisma Carpenter once let it slip that the set was like the love boat, with everyone hooking up with each other. But I didn't realize Whedon had. Whedon had power, so that is sort of...unethical. It's also not surprising, because people in Hollywood have always done that.
[SMG has been smart about this, not said anything about what happened on the set or backstage. David Boreanze has been tightlipped as well. CC and Marsters not so much.]
It does blow the lid off of the happy marriage they appeared to have, and their ideal life.
Also, if true, it puts an interesting...twist on a lot of things...that I've picked up on over the years. But I am skeptical, mainly due to how it came out. It seems odd to just blog about it. I'm thinking this was not a pleasant divorce, and there's a bit of bitterness there?
I honestly don't know. Don't really care. I never worshipped Whedon. I don't worship writers. Nor did I see him as a feminist. And I've been, as you know, highly critical of his work.

Trouble is in places such as Tumblr land they've gone nuts. It's like every Christmas has come at once for the Whedon haters on there and that sadly tarnishes their view of shows such as Buffy.
Whedon like his actors are just people and people are often deeply flawed, just like their audience. Trouble some like to ignore that.

Date: 2017-08-21 12:29 pm (UTC)Agree with pretty much everything you stated above. People are human. And we don't know why Kai is posting this.
Also what someone does in their personal life doesn't have much bearing on their work, particularly when said work is collaborative in nature and not a solo effort.

Date: 2017-08-21 02:51 pm (UTC)ED is a good guess. I'd add AA too. AH is always possible and perhaps even MN. Speculation is so much fun. :)
ETA: SG seems like a candidate too.

Date: 2017-08-21 04:49 pm (UTC)Hee Hee, it is fun to speculate. I would guess MN and possibly AA, and ED. Also, potentially Harmony and Claire Kramer.
I'm pretty sure SMG was involved with DB at the time.
AH was into AD, so unlikely. Also she's the godparent of his kid along with her husband. No way on AB. JB is also a possibility.

Date: 2017-08-21 04:58 pm (UTC)Hee. I remember it coming out in S3 on a fan website, which condemned the actor and they had decided to stop watching the show as a result of it and advised others to do the same. Nothing concrete. But it would explain a lot. Also, there's some indication that CC may have hooked up with DB and NB at different points.
Denisof didn't hook up with anyone until he got on Angel, because he had a strict policy against it. (Wise man).

Date: 2017-08-21 05:07 pm (UTC)Hee Hee. Or not. ;-)
But I wouldn't put it past Kai or CC to do so. CC has come close to revealing bits here and there already.
MN wouldn't, nor would SMG or ED or AA. Career killer.

Date: 2017-08-21 05:14 pm (UTC)Exactly. Which leaves pretty much everyone out except maybe Kai. Because most of them have some sort of career or have moved on.

Date: 2017-08-21 05:01 pm (UTC)No, see my response above. That's actually unlikely. Ironically her pregnancy saved the character. They were planning on having her be the big bad of the season and killing her off at the very end.
Dochawk on the ATPO Board was best friend's with one of the PA's and managed to spoil me for the entire season. Apparently she was late to filming and caused multiple delays. Fox and WB requested Whedon put an end to it.

Date: 2017-08-21 03:55 pm (UTC)According to Dochawk from the ATPO board, who was best friends with David Greenwalt's production assistant, they pretty much had planned on CC being the Big Bad and written out at the end of the season. Apparently CC was causing issues on set, and delays in production time. So they came up with a way to write her out and re-work what they felt was a bad arc in S3. CC getting pregnant ironically saved her character and made it possible for her to come back. If she hadn't gotten pregnant, she'd have been the Big Bad and just died at the end.
This was to a degree confirmed by Tim Minear on the Angel Board during the series run and on Whedonesque, along with other interviews.
So....depends on who you talk to, I guess?

Date: 2017-08-21 04:51 pm (UTC)Should add, that I was skeptical when he told me all of this back in 2002, but he also revealed the entire plot of Angel S4 in December 2002, before Cordy slept with Connor. And he was right on every single item. (I was almost completely spoiled for that season as a result. It's the only reason I believed him.)

Date: 2017-08-21 03:59 pm (UTC)Wow. I just read it.
Although, his popularity has been waning for a while now...do in part to some things he's said on twitter that ahem, got him into trouble. And the release of the Wonder Woman script did not help.

Read all the posts linked to the announcement. It's a fascinating, heartbreaking read. (I'm number 89 or so...)

Date: 2017-08-21 04:54 pm (UTC)Can't get to it yet. But ann1962 posted a link above to Reel Talk stating that the site was shutting down in part due to the controversy. I think it was coming for a while now, Whedon's popularity was waning due in part to inappropriate tweets. And the leaked Wonder Woman script did not help. He's been sliding down-hill since roughly 2012, and now we know why.

Date: 2017-08-22 12:24 am (UTC)Depends on the work and the behavior of the artist. And, the degree to which our society and the industry have influenced it.
Mel Gibson -- I can't watch any longer. Or rather, I can't watch anything he's done post Maverick.
Tom Cruise? I can hand wave. He doesn't bother me. I feel sorry for him.
Virigina Woolf....on the fence (she's a racist)
TS Eliot, no, no effect
Bill Cosby ? Definitely, mainly because he sold himself as a family man, and a kind man. It goes against what he promoted.
Joss Whedon...it does taint some of it, also gives a reading to his work that I could have done without, mainly because he has a heavy sexual content to his work, and a heavy gender emphasis. But mainly, it made me realize how insecure he is, and this man, whose life I'd envied, wasn't all that enviable. And his life wasn't as great as I thought.
Mainly? It's yet another veil being ripped away. In 2017, one veil after another is being ripped away in our culture, revealing things we may not want to see.
Meanwhile...the eclipse was cool.

Date: 2017-08-21 11:48 pm (UTC)But David Greenwalt bragged on the Profit commentaries about having an affair with two actresses at the same time on a show and I was pretty sure he meant Charisma and Sarah. Pruitt, the stunts coordinator, was fired for being too direct with fans about what was going on with the show and he released a "fairy tale" story that suggested Greenwalt and Sarah were having an affair. He also mentioned he had video evidence of because of all the filming he did behind the scenes on the show.
My guess would be Alyson and Amy as they were always clearly his favorites on those two shows, but it sounds like there were a lot. I also doubt that the affairs began during Buffy but had probably been going on all along.

Date: 2017-08-22 12:01 am (UTC)I was surprised by it. He just didn't seem the type. But clearly he's less secure than I thought he was. Surprises me that she talked about him having affairs during Buffy, though. (But I also haven't seen Girlfriend's Guide to Divorce..so was unaware of that.)
SMG and David Greenwalt? I knew about Sara and Boreanze, because a bunch of fans stopped watching it because of that one. Also, guessed CC and Greenwalt. But if he was doing Gellar and Chase, that would explain why they hated each other and why she left for Angel.
I doubt Hannigan hooked up with Whedon, mainly because she's still friends with him and so is her husband. But it's possible.
I remember Pruitt getting fired -- among other things, he kept pointing out how Sarah didn't do any of the stunts.
I'm guessing the affairs were going on all along, as well, not just during Buffy. It is unfortunately very common in that industry. He's by no means the first nor the last show-runner to do it. Or actor for that matter. Boreanze's marriage finally broke up because of it. The problem with being in the public eye or a celebrity, is everything you do is placed under a microscope. It's not like other executives, etc do this. They do.
