Happy New Year from Brooklyn, NY. Cold here, about 10 degrees F, which is probably - something C.
Why anyone wants to stand out in the middle of Times Square tonight is beyond me. I've done it, well, sort of, we used to hang out in bars in the vicinity -- we never stood with the millions in Times Square, because not crazy. You can watch it on tv.

1. Favorite Flick or Memorable Ones...

* Thor : Ragnorack which made me laugh, hard, throughout. Also for the pretty fight scenes that looked like paintings.

* Wonder Woman - for providing a female superhero film that was kick-ass and for the most part, highly enjoyable.

* The Greatest Showman - for a singing and dancing Hugh Jackman and well the circus act. (Also saw La La Land in 2017, but sorry, Greatest Showman was far more enjoyable. I got bored in La La Land -- long musical montages of Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone brooding don't do a lot for me. Much prefer to watch people dance on a trapeze, well, than two amateurs flail at Ginger and Astair in among fake stars.)

* Moana for a great female heroine (I saw it in 2017). I want to be Moana when I grow up.

* The Last Jedi -- for changing the Star Wars verse and kicking that dumb old hero's journey trope to the proverbial curb, and snarking at it along the way. It switched things up, brought in new characters, and changed the franchise.

[I didn't see that movies this year. And can't seem to remember most of the ones I saw on Netflix or On Demand for some reason. I saw Ladybird -- but was underwhelmed by it for some reason. I felt like I'd seen or read the story before and didn't really relate to it. The lead irritated me, mainly because I identified with her mother and best friend more than I did with the protagonist, who reminded me a bit too much of some toxic female friends.)

2. Memorable Television Shows

* The Crown S2 -- although I think I streamed most of S1 in 2017 as well. It blew me away. A nuanced and very human portrait of Britain's reigning royal family and constitutional monarchy, which answered many questions I never thought I had.

* Lucifer -- which changed things up a bit, and played with the whole Christian mythos in a different way.

* Stranger Things - Netflix - for telling a fun horror tale with a bunch of talented kids in the main roles. While not perfect (what is?), it melded HP Lovecraftian horror with Spielbergian Sci-Fi, and a touch of Stephen King, yet in the end was really a story about a bunch of families in a small town dealing with a monster.

* Sense8 -- Netflix - completely different from anything else I've seen. And possibly the first time I've seen a transgender/lesbian romance and a homosexual romance portrayed in the same show with heart and kindness and compassion. Blending conspiracy thriller, super-hero sci-fi, and
romance, it worked, when it shouldn't.

*The Defenders -- for DD/JJ pairing, and the epic, albeit tragic DD/Electra romance. I loved it for the visuals, and the banter/in-depth conversations between JJ and DD.

*Good Behavior - TNT - a truly dark femme noir series, that is one of a kind. Pairs Michelle Dockery as an ex-con, thief, con artist, and former drug addict who falls for a hitman, and is seeking to be with her ten year old son.

*Legion -- F/X - possibly the best Marvel series on television, it feels a bit like the Prisoner mixed with the Misfits and a bunch of other things.

* This is Us -- insanely sentimental at times, yet notable for providing well-rounded character arcs, and featuring a loving couple who are overweight, and not Hollywood pretty.

*Doctor Who -- for Bill Potts and bringing in a female Doctor, finally.

Anyhow, they finished the countdown. There's the boom of fireworks in the distance. And New York, New York is playing in the background.

Happy 2018 -- hope it brings joy, peace, and kindness in its wake.
