2. Having successfully enraged myself by visiting FB last night, I'm staying off of it tonight. Sometimes I prefer the 1980s and 90s, where I could be blissfully unaware that hateful people lived in the world. Speaking of FB. Cousin posted about the horrors of FB, and all the garbage. And I thought, well..hello, social media. If you aren't careful who you friend you will run into stuff you despise.
Got to thinking, since I jumped on line roughly in the late 1990s, I've been on the following social media platforms:
* Yahoo list serves (Two email listserves on copyright, one journal/content owners, the other librarians. They did not agree on copyright at all. The librarians thought there shouldn't be any digitial copyrights and free access, while the copyright owners obviously wanted strict protections. I remember thinking, copyright holders? This is the internet, it's only going to get worse. So, good luck with that.)
* Myspace -- sort of the precursor to Tumblr. Horrible platform.
* Voy Forums -- which I actually liked as a discussion medium - far better in some respects to the ones that came after. You could just pick the threads you wanted, was ridiculously easy to avoid spoilers or people that would piss you off, or just comments that would piss you off while you got along perfectly well with the person outside of that topic. Better moderated. Went to archives fast.
And kept crashing.
* IM Chat -- annoying, hate it with the force of a thousand suns
* Live Journal -- better, actually liked this alot. Switched over to DW which had similar platform, do miss the ability to post pictures, vids, and polls. On DW -- you need a paid account to easily do any of the above. And posting pics requires a lot of weird hoops. But LJ is now owned by evil Russian marketing people and crashes and is plagued with lots of ads and annoying propaganda (most likely because it's run by evil Russian marketing people who are homophobic.)
* Facebook (FB) -- I joined to discuss politics in 2008, long before crazy family members and co-workers, church members, and college pals popped up. Back in 2008, it was just me and my lj friends. Which I kind of preferred.
* Word Press -- personal blog, less interactive and more controlled. Not fannish at all. I use it as a writing blog.
*Blogger -- similar to word press but not as good a platform
*Tumblr -- similar to Instagram, Pininterest -- very fannish, better for pictures than text or any discussion. Also everyone seems to be between the ages of 10-25. So too young. And impossible to follow.
*Twitter -- Everyone acts like they are twelve on it for some reason. I find it hard to follow and annoying. Rarely on it as a result. It's like being stuck in an elevator with a bunch of 12 year old bullies and a gossip. It seems to have less to do with discussion and more to do with a lot of people commenting on things, without listening to anyone. Very noisy.
Haven't tried Instagram or Pininterest, which are basically forums that you just post pictures to.
I like to write -- so not sure it works for me.
3. Haven't been feeling great lately. Not getting enough sleep, lots of nightmares or stress dreams. And been eating too much of the wrong things -- which made it worse. So, I've scaled back on the sugars, scaled back on chocolate. Was eating too much of that too. Trying to go to bed earlier. Hard. I'm a bit of an insominac. And I get up at 6am every morning. Been napping on the train.
Also, sciatic nerve is back. Right knee, hip and leg hurt, along with back. Need to lose weight, gained all that I lost back again -- it seems. Very discouraged. But hanging tough. Am changing diet again. Trying to up exercise and energy level. Meditating more. Doing more yoga stretches. Letting go. Hopefully this well help.
Work is stressful. Church is frustrating. Social life...no time or energy for. Ugga Bugger.
But hey, on the bright side, I'm about 200 pages into the novel I'm writing.

Date: 2018-04-04 03:30 am (UTC)I've warmed up to Jason. He's the kind of person whose behavior is a function of the company he keeps.
Ted Danson is funny--what comic timing he has--but his character makes me uneasy. (See the Trolley Problem).
My husband was on Phil-Lit (sp.? the Philosophy and Literature listserve) when he was in grad school. He was obsessed.
I was never on IM but I loved G-chat. I spent hours on it back in the day. I don't have an iPhone so no Instagram. I do have a Pinterest. I have boards for everything from vacation planning to colors to recipes to wishlists. There's a huge board for Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered. I have half a dozen boards for fanfic prompts/inspiration, too.
I follow a lot of "old" people on Tumblr, meaning people over 25. I might be the oldest person on Tumblr, for real. I don't post much of anything there. Lately, the tumblr is converting periods and quotation marks in my text into weird symbols. Maybe I should try posting a picture and putting the text underneath it?
I joined Facebook to try to keep in touch with a couple of friends and naturally one rarely posts at all and the other posts fake news and political memes. Worthless platform. The only good thing is that I successfully used a fake name to open the account. Go me!

Date: 2018-04-04 01:25 pm (UTC)I'll repeat what I told my cousin regarding FB and social media. Whether you like the platform or not has a lot to do with why you joined it, who you friended on it, and how often they post. I treated Tumblr the way you treated FB, so despise Tumblr. But actually like FB, it's mainly family members, friends, like-minded souls from my church and close social media friends who I've been online with since 2002 (many of whom left LJ/DW and moved over to FB, because they stopped being fannish.)
I've long since lost interest in fandom. And haven't found one to replace it --- so fandom platforms like Tumblr, don't work for me that well. Also, I'm not crafty in the least, so PinInterest is bewildering to me and none of my friends are on it. So if I joined, I'd be by myself and rather bored.

Date: 2018-04-04 01:30 pm (UTC)To give you an example of how I've used FB? A friend arranged a trip to Martha's Vineyard for her birthday on it. We also meet-up through it. She prefers to use FB messenger to arrange meetings than email -- she's in IT, and inundated with emails. Another example? I've managed to discuss ancestory with family members from far away via it. And, a social media friend, who is a Professor of Media Studies in Arizona has set up a Good Place discussion forum for those of us who are on the geeky side. She also posts videos of her cats, and discusses research she's conducting on the NRA, along with trips to places like Pakistan. Another friend is discussing what is happening in the UK.
The platform is only as good as what you choose to bring to it.

Date: 2018-04-04 04:09 am (UTC)Yeppir, those two are the biggees, no doubt. I'm reasonably good now at watching my diet, since doing so controls my diabetes without the need to take medication. Nevertheless, winter is just awful for me in terms of maintaining proper weight and energy levels. I'm prone to SAD, and have pretty much no cold tolerance, so I don't get out for my daily walks like I do in the warmer months of the year-- walks that do more for my general mood than any other single thing.
As to your experience on social media, I mean-- wow, you certainly have! For me, it was Voy, then LJ, now Dreamwidth, and that's it. When Facebook first came about I considered it until I found out they wanted you to post under your real name and location.
No, no, no... did I mention, noooo? Literally, the first words that came into my mind when I read that was, "Are they crazy? This is the internet! The only reason they'd require this is to collect info from you and use it for ads or to sell to other parties for ads! No way, people!
Now it turns out the ads are the least of the abuses they're propagating.
Finally, on a (television) tangent, I'd like to ask a question that your expertise in the subject may be able to answer. Are you following Black Lightning? It has me wondering if you know of any other father/daughter superhero teams in comics history? I have to believe there have been father/son teams, but father/daughter? Is this totally unique to the Black Lightning universe?
And-- yay on the novel! Keep pluggin' away!

Date: 2018-04-04 12:34 pm (UTC)No, stopped following Black Lightening, mainly because I had 88 hours of TV taped, and had forgotten to put "save all episodes" not just "the last five" for Black Lightening. Damn. But there it is. So deleted the whole thing. Mainly because there's no point when you lose half of it.
Damn. I would have liked the father/daughter team-up only reason was watching it.
Hmm...outside of the Incredibles, no, don't know of any. And that's a whole family.
FB - it's like all of them actually. To join these things you do have to give them some personal information. You can also control your settings on FB. I just deleted the ad settings, do it every once and a while. They collect data. LJ certainly collected it. DW says they don't. But they have to to an extent. Best policy? Just don't become famous or interesting to anyone. Then it doesn't matter.
