1. Joss Whedon's Victorian Sci-fi Series the Nevers Ordered by HBO

So..hmmm.. Victorian Steampunk? Also this should please all the "Season 6 Buffy" Whedon fans who thought...now, if only he could get a series on HBO, then he could really spread his wings have a blast. (IDK -- I think he's better with someone placing him under restraints...not like Fox did, more akin to the WB. ie. You can do whatever you want, just keep it tasteful.)

Don't get too excited or upset folks, HBO has ordered a lot of television series over the years that have never seen the light of day. The most recent was an insane Witch series entitled The Devil You Know. And the highly controversial Confederacy Series...which appears to have been scrapped (at least I hope its been scrapped.) I'm amazed he didn't go with Netflix, whose more of a sure bet. I'd have gone with Netflix. But apparently HBO gave him the most money.

Also there's a little shake-up going on at HBO which may or may not be associated with the huge A&T and Time Warner Merger. Time Warner owned HBO. Time Warner sold it's cable business to Spectrum and is now selling its entertainment division to AT&T. Except the Justice Department is fighting the merger. The only problem is -- they just approved the Disney/Fox merger, so on what grounds can they fight the AT&T and Time Warner merger.

On HBO : They order a tv series, film a few episodes, run it by test audiences, market it -- see if it has a market, if so, it gets launched, if not, it gets shelved and maybe sold somewhere else. HBO is different than broadcast television in that it is subscriber driven, paid by the people who subscribe to HBO. And from the current content on HBO, tends to be directed mainly towards upwardly mobile male professionals and some women professionals. Lots of nudity, lots of violence.

Netflix tends to be more likely to show a series they've ordered without testing it first. They also air it all at once, you can binge almost immediately.

So...we shall see.

2. Laying about today. Off to see the Broadway Revival of Carousel tonight with a friend. She scored tickets for $49 each. (Which is ridiculously cheap for B'way. I'm guessing we're in the rear Mezzaine.) It's starring Jesse Muella, Josha Henry and Renee Fleming. And has great choreography.

Trying to write. Getting little of it done. Stupid internet keeps distracting me.

3. Television?

Eh, not watching that much to report on.

* Great British Baking Show -- still entertaining and a bit nationalistic this week. They really don't know how Americans view pies. They think an American Pie is just a cream or custard pie. No. American's view American Pie as Apple Pie, Pumpkin Pie, Sweet Potatoe Pie, French Silk Pie, Blueberry Pie, Strawberry Rhubarb Pie, Mincemeat Pie, Banana Cream Pie, Pecan Pie, Lemon Meringue Pie, Key Lime Pie, etc.

But the Brits think an American Pie is just Pumpkin Pie, Banana Cream, Pecan, Sweet Potato, Key Lime...basically cream pies. And yes, we have a lot of custard and cream pies, but so do they. And yes, custard and cream pies are often very sweet.

I wanted to strangle Paul Hollywood. "Oh American Pie is too sweet for me. It's better when they make it the way we would."

I hate to break this to you, but I grew up with Apple Pie, tart apples, cinnamin, spices, and Pumpkin Pie with cinnamin, not that sweet at all. Also MinceMeat Pie which my father loves. And my mother's family came to the States as far back as the 1600s. They passed the recipes down. American Pie is both fruit pie and custard/cream pies. We also have meat pies over here. Our cultures aren't as different as you think. The differences are actually relatively minor.

* Victoria

Eh, slow. Too much focus on the romance, not enough on everything else. Which is odd for me of all people to state, but there it is.

Do like their relationship, however.

* Cancelled Dietland, could not get into it. This is the fourth Marti Noxon series that I've tried and could not get into, I'm guessing I'm not a fan of the writer?

* Considering cancelling Call the Midwife, haven't made it through an episode yet this year, without my attention wandering elsewhere.

* Yellowstone is still holding my attention.

* Nashville isn't...but I'm hanging in there.

* The Expanse...I keep going to sleep during.

I like the idea of a Victorian steampunk show, but I have grown less and less enchanted with Joss's storytelling over the years, and I'm not going to hold my breath for this one.

I wonder if the guy was thinking of American pie from restaurants, which is a different animal from traditional homemade.

Yes, fruit pie is better tart. Apple, cherry, rhubarb and blackberry pies are all best tart. I'll eat sweet apple pie, but it's a disappointment. Sweet cherries just don't make as good pie or cobbler as tart ones. I've had rhubarb pie that wasn't tart exactly once. It was the only store bought rhubarb pie I've had and it was awful. Even things naturally sweet like peach and blueberry pie are better with some lemon in them. I've had Key lime pie every way from puckery sour to very sweet. It's almost always good, but better on the sour side.

[On the other hand I am a sucker for pecan pie ;o)]

Yes, I know seats like that. The Detroit Masonic Temple was built in, I think, the 1920s and still had the same seats when I saw The Lion King there. I had black and blue knees afterwards.
