Well, that was not quite what I expected. Disturbing on a few levels...

So..Grocery Store Joe is still on it..dang it. Although he has improved, or rather his partner has figured out how to choreograph around him. I really hope he gets booted off this week along with Alexis and Alan. But I'm not holding out much hope.

Pablo's dance so far was the best. I agree with judges. He's the one to beat. Actually I've been agreeing with the judges for the most part all along, and in particular Len. Carrie Ann is a big softie. (I used to watch ballroom dancing competitions on PBS -- I did it after Strictly Ballroom aired, and got a bit obsessed. I can't dance at all -- taken various dance classes, but I've no rhythm and see everything as if it were reflected in a mirror, so always have to take two seconds to remember which side to go, and I can't count. (Have issues knitting for this reason -- can't keep count.) But I love it all the same.)

Whoa. I should have voted last week, because they voted off the best damn dancer on the series -- Juan Pablo and Cheryl. Seriously. My votes didn't matter. I gave Juan two. Juan Pablo nailed the dances. And he was voted off in favor of three who are lackluster at best, Alexis, Milo and Bobby. I didn't think he needed my help. I was so wrong. The judges were REALLY upset, and I'm guessing probably wished they'd given much lower scores to Bobby Sherman, Milo and Alexis.

Everyone's pissed off at the viewers.

But I'm picking up on a pattern.

So...taking a page from people I've seen discussing voting online. I voted before I saw it again. I don't regret who I voted for...okay, that's not quite true. I wish I voted last week, and I wish I just gave all 6 votes to Evanna this week. [I voted for Evanna/Keko, Pablo/?, and Bobby Sherman/Sharna. Most of my votes went to Evanna, mainly because I don't think the other two require my help. So I had six votes, three for Evanna, 2 for Pablo, and one for Bobby (now I'm wishing I hadn't voted for at all).]

Missed last week's -- voting wise and watching wise, because I got distracted and forgot about it. So my votes only count towards next week's show. The votes that counted for this week's were provided last week. Which is weird. The way they do the viewer voting is very odd.

They tabulate last week's viewers votes with this week's judging. So, basically, your vote this week counts towards next week -- and if you voted for people who got ousted, your vote doesn't count at all.

What they should do is -- what American Idol does. Which is have people vote for the dances of that night. Tabulate the people's votes with the judges and have the elimination show the next night. This is what Dancing With the Stars did in their heyday. And give people 24 hours to cast their vote from when the show airs to the next day. But they don't do it that way. As a result, people often vote without even watching the show first -- because voting closes when the show ends. You have to vote during it and immediately after it. And...your vote doesn't count for that week, but the next one. So...why bother watching it? From a viewer or fan perspective, the series ceases being a dance competition and becomes well, how long can I keep my favorite F list celebrity on the show? F may be a bit too gracious, the competition is digging into the bottom of the barrel at the moment. Also the people invested in voting want celebrities they recognize and know, who have an interesting story, are fun to watch, and are relatable -- like themselves. Like the folks voting for Grocery Store Joe and Bobby Sherman, don't care if they can dance -- they aren't watching for that. They just want to see how far they can go and what they'll do each week. If you have a huge fan base -- you'll stay on longer. So for some it is name recognition. Also, I think ABC has put too much weight on the viewers votes, and not enough weight on the professional dance judges.

Add to this an annoyance by some fans that there are "professionally trained" dancers in the competition or what I like to call ringers. Pablo, Tinasha, Alexis and the Football player were all to some extent ringers. So I think a percentage of the voters are invested in getting them off prior to the finals. I know most of the voters didn't watch the show prior to voting, like I didn't, for the same reasons...they are taping or recording it. So if they wait to see it first -- they won't get to ensure their fav's stay on. Which means they aren't voting for the best dancers. Add to this -- like me, they probably figure the good dancers don't need their votes.

The unfortunate consequence of this...is that it makes the show less entertaining. It's no longer a dance competition. The judges votes begin to cease to matter. It's gotten to the point that Bobby Sherman could just go out there and wiggle his fanny and he'd win. And if that's the case...then why bother watching?

The pattern I picked up on -- in case it wasn't clear from the above is:

* the people voting don't like professional dancers being on the show and don't want a professional dancer to win
* they like sexy young people learning to dance who they can relate to, and are sort of goofy and entertaining (anyone over the age of 35 isn't all that interesting to them)
* They like to vote counter to the judges and don't respect the judging or care about it
* probably voting prior to watching the competition due to recording it, and probably don't care that much how good the dances actually are

Well, I feel validated for not watching the show previous seasons and I'm thinking of skipping the finale. Because really why bother? So are a lot of people apparently. Pablo's ouster resulted in outrage across the board.

Pablo had been getting perfect scores from the Judges. He was in the lead via the judges scores. The judges mistake was giving Bobby Sherman and Grocery Store Joe anything above a 3. If they'd scored those guys really low...it may have factored in Pablo's favor. Then again maybe not. If I were a judge, I'd have gone home and had a stiff brandy and laughed my head off at my chosen occupation. Then called my agent to see if I can get out of my contract with DWTS.

Although he has improved, or rather his partner has figured out how to choreograph around him.

It was both really. Definitely her choreography in the first dance but the second showed he really had gotten better, though given his start it probably didn't show as much compared to the others. At least he's finally out and I daresay he seemed relieved.

I blame the judges themselves for the results frankly. In the early weeks Alexis definitely deserved to stay and I could understand the judges trying to weight the scales for her to keep her in since she looked in danger of an early ouster.

But she has not been improving the way other dancers have. Evanna is the clearest example. I didn't think much of Keo's choreography for her contemporary but her redone foxtrot is an excellent example of her new ability. But for the past two weeks Alexis has been very overscored. I fail to understand the raves they kept giving her when she was the fourth best of the top group.

She was in jeopardy this week but she would have gone home weeks ago without those scores. And instead someone else, maybe John or DeMarcus, would have still been around this week and they would have gone home instead, leaving Juan Pablo, Milo, Evanna and Bobby for the finale. (Sure Bobby doesn't deserve to be there but he knows it too).

Mike was saying that what DwtS needs to do is to install what Project Runway did with the Tim Gunn save -- a way for someone to get saved from early elimination. They sort of did that with the fake-out the week that DeMarcus would have left, but it would add suspense if everyone knew that a save was available if it were put into play.

Juan Pablo's Argentine tango was indeed terrific this week. I'm willing to bet he's going to go on tour with the DwtS traveling show. I expect he'll be a big draw.
