Year-End Meme

beer_good_foamy, I think it's the Year-End Meme? The biggest challenge in completing this meme is trying to remember the television shows I gave up on, continued with, and didn't get around to, along with books and other items. I have a bit of a brain fog at the moment -- possibly a hold over from the head cold. (Or so I hope.)
Which TV shows did you let go of in 2018?
The Gifted, Big Bang Theory, Star, Claws, Scandal, Vampire Diaries, The Expanse, Daredevil, Sense8, Timeless, To Call the Midwife, Durrant!,Poldark, The Residentand never really grabbed my attention Charmed, Seal Team,Black Lightening, DC Legends of Tomorrow, Legacies, American Crime Story: Assassination of Giovanni, Good Girls, Supergirl, Better Things, Dynasty, Happy, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and Barry.
Which TV shows did you start watching in 2018?
Manifest, 9-1-1, Killing Eve, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Kominsky Method (yesterday -- so may not count), The Bodyguard, Homecoming, The Connors, and hopefully a one-season only series, The Haunting of Hill House.
Which TV shows did you mean to get into but didn't in 2018? Why?
I keep meaning to watch Altered Carbon, The Americans, The Romanoffs, Castle Rock, Luke Cage S2, Iron Fist S2, My Brilliant Friend, Sharp Objects, Orange is the New Black, The Deuce and Jack Ryan and it's just not happening. Why? Time. Mood. Too many television shows.
Which TV show impressed you least in 2018?
The Gifted -- it got boring. Which isn't easy to do considering the subject matter. Scandal - also got boring. The Resident -- too cliche and overused tropes. Sense8 four hour movie finale -- a convoluted mess.
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina...while Riverdale got creepier and more interesting, Sabrina...gave up too quickly on its promise of sly dark Lynchian humor.
Actually it was probably Sense8 finale, which I found disappointing. And Timeless...which got way too dark and grim.
Which TV shows do you intend on checking out in 2019?
Good Omens, My Brilliant Friend, The Crown S2, His Dark Materials, The Passage (because I like the kid who has been cast), maybe a few of the items on Starz - Outlander, American Gods... Also, hang on, there's a Name of the Rose TV series?! Oh, and if any of the advertised Whedon series make it to the air this year I guess I'll give them a go.
Which TV show do you think you might let go of in 2018 unless things significantly improve?
"Doctor Who, assuming there are any actual episodes planned for this year". I liked Thirteen, but the plots this year were severely lacking in imagination. (yes, I stole most of this answer from beer good foamy because I wholeheartedly agree. Except that I've been bored by the series since the Doctor Song arc ended, and very little has happened to change that, except for maybe two or three episodes each year.)
Also, Sabrina, Manifest (unless it picks up a bit), Stranger Things (which I honestly think ran its course), Great British Baking Show (I think I may have burnt out on it finally, so we shall see?), Wyonna Earp, and Station 19.
Which TV shows do you think you’ll never let go of no matter how crappy they get?
Grey's Anatomy, General Hospital, Lucifer, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (because I'm determined to see how this nutty thing ends -- even if this season is well..unevenly written is possibly a gross understatement).
Your favorite film you watched this year?
Black Panther
Your favorite book read this year?
Didn't really have one? Although I'm enjoying Brian Vaughn's Saga at the moment.
Your favorite album or song to listen to this year?
Uhm...I listened to a lot of David Bowie for a while there. Also a ton of Cher and Aretha Franklin. I'd say my favorite was Aertha Franklin.
Your favorite TV show(s) of the year?
Good Place, Lucifer (even though this year was less than stellar to put it mildly), Haunting of Hill House, The Connors, Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, 9-1-1, Killing Eve, Legion (which was trippy)
Your favorite online fandom community of the year?
The Good Place - The Boundless Void on FB and on DW. Also Lucifer fandom.
Your best new fandom discovery of the year?
People like the character of Cyclops again, yeah! Also "JAY and Miles X-Plain the X-men because someone has to" - podcasts. Oh and the Good Place Podcasts done by Shawn the Head Demon.
Your fandom that made an unexpected comeback this year?
X-men fandom, and weirdly Farscape (albeit briefly), and well Buffy -- but I've been in and out of that fandom for more than 15 years now, so it doesn't really count. Did finish reading the comics though...which got better under Chris Gage and Rebecca Issacs, then got worse when Whedon came back to write the finale run. (I don't think Whedon can write Buffy comics...X-men, yes, Buffy, no.)
The most missed of your old fandoms?
Let's say Game of Thrones. That fandom appears to be dead? Possibly because most of it was the readers and non-readers having fun with each other, and now that GRR Martin is not finishing the last book in the series -- there's no fun to be had. Also the series jumped away from the books a while back losing some of the devoted book fandom in the process.
I'm ambivalent. Having read the books, I think the series is actually better in some respects. A lot less grim. And far more satisfying. There was a point in the books -- that I wanted to tell whichever character was about to go on a long-ass journey to meet up with some relative or other, not to bother. You will never reach them. It's impossible. They will die first. This is futile. The books is an exercise in frustration...endless frustration. It's like being caught in an overgrown maze with a bunch of characters doomed to never reach their destination.
In stark contrast -- the television series is rather fun and far more satisfying. Also I'm not that invested emotionally. I just found the fandom to be sort of fun for a bit -- until people got weirdly invested and wanted things out of it that let's face it weren't ever gonna happen. (Fans always give television writers far more credit than they deserve. TV writers aren't that brilliant -- they write scripts really fast, film it really fast, and pray for the best. It's not like writing fanfic where you can revise it to death before you post it. I remember talking to two guys at work about Breaking Bad and how shocked they were that the entire series wasn't plotted out ahead of time and the writer's just wrote it off the cuff and it somehow worked (well for the most part, didn't please all the arm-chair critics) -- mainly because various actors changed lines here and there and they hired a team of writers that understood the characters. TV is hard, fast, painful, and insane. I wouldn't want to do it for a living.)
Your biggest fan anticipations for the coming year?
Uhm...I got too many to choose from.
1. Marvel fandom
a. Dark Phoenix
b. Avengers Infinity War 2
c. Cyclops resurrection in the X-men comics and his team-up with a resurrected Wolverine
c -- is my most anticipated for the Marvel fandom.
2. Television
a. Game of Throne Finale
b. Lucifer on Netflix
b -- Lucifer on Netflix. Sorry GoT, but I'm more curious about Lucifer's premiere on Netflix. I can sort of guess where GoT is headed, and am rather ambivalent. I'll watch it of course. Also, I did enjoy the 6th season more than most possibly because when it comes to GoT -- I tend to go in with low expectations. (I read the books.)
3. New series
a. His Dark Materials
b. Good Omens
a -- His Dark Materials (I really want to see this one handled well, highly disappointed in how they dealt with the movie. I loved the books.)
Short answer? Lucifer, the return of Cyclops to the X-men Comics, and His Dark Materials...assuming it ever comes to pass.

Date: 2019-01-03 01:20 am (UTC)And there's so much content out there now...it's hard to care about certain things. I'm finding that I want to watch pulpy genre shows more than quality dramas..because I don't want to think, I just want to be entertained.
