shadowkatWatched Television today...eh, some good, some...making me think, why am I still watching this?
* Roswell, New Mexico -- this is surprisingly enough working for me. I didn't expect it to.[In part, because I wasn't a fan of the previous version. (I don't really remember it.) I'm wondering if those of us who either don't remember the previous version, disliked it, or a combo of both -- will be more likely to enjoy the reboot? Probably. Because I'm not comparing it to the original at all in my head -- I only saw two or three episodes of the original (based on fan recs) was highly unimpressed, and gave up on it and then promptly forgot about it. I remember people being really upset it was cancelled back in the day. But that's about it.] But I like the ironic political slant, of the actual aliens (who are attractive, white with superpowers and in positions of power in the community) being threatened by the illegal immigrants (who have no power, and own a diner). Isobel -- who may or may not be a murderer is blond, blue-eyed, beautiful and has the ability to read and manipulate minds. Max, tall, handsome, attractive and the local sheriff, has the ability to heal and to kill. Michael -- who is gay, and very attractive, is living out of a bunker, but is very intelligent and can kill and move things with his mind. They are dangerous.
Anyhow...what's interesting is the conflict between the romantic leads is a bit more complicated. They had a teen romance. But now, years later, they've had other relationships. And Liz isn't sure whether Max and his family of aliens killed her sister -- and framed her sister for the deaths of two other people, resulting in her family being in constant danger. (I can't see Max doing it, Isobel, definitely.) Since Max is the local sheriff -- this makes it difficult to investigate. Add to that Max has been aiding her father and saved both her life and her father's recently. Also, Isobel and Michael have threatened her -- irritating Max.
I feel a little sorry for Max. I also like Nathan Parsons in the role. But I like Parsons, have liked the actor since he played Ethan on General Hospital. He's an Australian-born American Actor. Emotes really well with his eyes. I thought he got across his yearning for Liz and inability to act on it, very well. I tend to prefer actors who emote well with their eyes and are not traditionally handsome, lean and sort of rugged.
Liz -- the actress playing this role is good. She also emotes well. And the actor playing Kyle has lost a lot of weight in the face. He's also more interesting a character than I expected.
This one has potential. I'm not bored yet. I got bored pretty quickly with Charmed and gave up after the third episode.
* Manifest -- is continuing to irritate me. I like aspects of it. But it is frustrating to watch. It's like an endless puzzle that can't be solved because if they solve it the show is over.
Reminds me of LOST. I find those types of series irritating.
I'd rather they did four-five episode plot arcs. These are much tighter plotted. Not as convoluted.
And usually don't have gaping plot holes. It's actually why I sort of prefer British and Netflix television programming -- the seasons are shorter -- 6-10 episodes, so the plots are shorter and tighter. They don't feel the need to draw it out. Here, the plot is dragging and taking attention away from the character moments.
The episode I just saw (I'm two behind) -- they are chasing after the Major, who is apparently in charge of the whole thing and is female. Also the Major is insanely smart and powerful and able to figure out what people are doing. (eyeroll). Meanwhile the hero is worrying about hiscreepy son ...who has periodic fits. While his sister would just like to go back to the great family she had before her Dad got back -- his twin sister (who is now five years older than he is) wanted her twin brother back but not her father -- because the new step-dad is much cooler and takes her rock climbing, while old Dad is too busy trying to figure out who is behind the conspiracy and protecting her brother. (I do see where she's coming from and I'd pick new Dad too...but honey, you look like a selfish bitch.) As this is going on, Michaela, the hero's sister (and actually my favorite character in the series) is trying to deal with the fact that her fiancee married her best friend. Not helped by the fact that the fiancee admits he loves her most and no she's not a wrecking ball. I'm thinking -- if you spent every day mourning her, and wanting to wake up beside her -- why the heck did you marry her best friend? Seriously dude, that's just a crap move, no matter how you look at it. This series does not paint human beings in the best of lights.
I may give up on this one soon.
* This is Us -- another tear-jerker. It guest starred Griffin Dunn as the Pearson's uncle.
I realized watching it that Jack Pearson, the Dad, has always irritated me. Actually the kids parents have irritated me from the beginning. I really like Kevin though.
* Grey's Anatomy -- a mixed bag. It's a bit slow in places. Also way too much reliance on love triangles this season (I'm not a fan). A little annoyed that they dropped the Meredith/Greg German (can't remember the character's name) working relationship.
* A Million Little Things -- not clear where they are going with this. It's not going in the direction I expected. Has definite potential. But at the moment, I really only like Gary and Maggie, everyone else I want to smack.

I really want to like chef lady, but she keeps being super wishy-washy. I like the implication that Barbara Morgan is Maggie's oncologist, though. This show really likes tying literally everyone together in multiple ways.
Yep. Although the tying together everyone in a This is Us/Six Degrees of Separation sort of way...could get old fast. Barbara Morgan was the woman who thanked Eddie for his eulogy for John in the second episode. But she wasn't Gary's oncologist, just Maggie's.
Chef Lady is a bit too self-absorbed for my taste. Also why does EVERYONE contact John when they have a problem? And does John talk and help everyone but his own family -- who rarely saw him? Katherine is similar - she'd talk to John, but ignored her own husband and family. It's odd that the only two characters who aren't insanely whiny, are the two with Cancer. LOL! Oh, and I think Chef's hubby, probably is bi-polar. In the last episode he had this manic bit on the superbowl ad and then just crashed and decided to commit suicide -- that's not about unfulfilling work but about a chemical imbalance. It's an oddly written series...but weirdly compelling in spite of itself.
On Roswell? It's worth noting that I probably wouldn't have watched it or tried it without Parsons. (Which tells you something about how I felt about the original, I guess.I totally get why you hate him -- if you have preconceived notions on the characters or a previous love of the series or actor playing that role -- but outside of the fact that I found the previous Max repulsive, I've no memory of the previous series and no clue what happened previously. Reboots can be dicey for pre-existing fans. They almost work better for new fans or fans who aren't too attached to the original. ) The aliens vs. illegal immigrant set-up and the guy playing Michael and the actress playing Liz pulled me in. Thanks for the clarification -- I couldn't figure out who the Sheriff was. That it is Kyle's Mom is really interesting. My favorite is the actor playing Michael -- that guy has charisma.
On Mainfest? I'm watching for Michaela and the female Doctor. Sort of ambivalent about the others...although I like Ben and Cal well enough, but they may lose me soon in regards to the plotting. ;-)
